Modern motors just make my blood boil with so much unnecessary stuff, massive repair costs, dealer apathy etc which is the reason to recommission this and use it as my daily again
Where do we start, I bought this in about 1994 and it was 2 years old with 22,000 miles on the clock, it was first registered to Vauxhall Motors and was then bought by a Vauxhall employee who traded it in for an Omega B poor soul, at the time I did the electrical work for the local Vauxhall dealers and the car popped up on the forecourt for sale so I traded my 1yr old Omega estate in PX, Ive always used estate cars for work instead of vans as it made more sense for family use and insurance.
Im sure many folks won’t get the car but it’s a very rare model, they made less than 100 and out of those only 12 were manual gearbox models and this is one of the manuals, the specification of this model is leather interior with height adjustable front seats, special alloy wheels, air con, electric windows all round, electric sunroof, central locking/alarm, electrically adjustable and heated mirrors, heated front seats, trip computer for MPG/average speed etc, self leveling rear suspension and a bit more ive probably missed
This also came with the 3.0 24V straight 6 engine as used in the GSI models and some Senators, this particular engine produced 217hp on the rolling road and gave a "theoretical" top speed of nearly 150mph with 0-60 in just over 7 seconds
Over the years of use and abuse its now covered nearly 380,000 miles with only general maintenance/wear and tear stuff like 3 clutches, a top end rebuild with new timing chains/guides at 201,000 miles, numerous water pumps, a few exhaust bits, lots and lots of tyres and lots and lots of fuel, I reckon about 12,000 gallons of the stuff!
Unfortunately rust was becoming a problem at MOT times as it would with any vehicle of this age so it was retired about 7 years ago but its time has come!
It scrubs up ok, from a distance! lets take a closer look, the rear aches which are hidden when the doors are shut
The door bottoms
As you can see there has been a few futile attempts to keep the old bus MOTd which have now failed, its going to take a while of digging and stripping to see the total extent but most of the cars from this era tend to rot from the inside out so I think there is going to be lots of grindy/weldy action!
