Finally got around to finishing a job I started a while back. Little bit messy as I didn't manage to get a proper seal on where the fuel tank sender attaches but already looks a lot better inside

Another job on the weekend list was to sort a few of the bits related to the fuel tank which had seen better days, one of which was the fuel tank sender
Time for a spot of treatment in one of the other workshop additions I picked up a few weeks back, which on opening seemed to have made a bit of a difference
Not 100% but much better than before, the rest I can do by hand.

Minor update on the celica as I managed to get a couple more hard to find replacements.
Slight bit of frustration as was told they'd been repaired to a hight standard and were totally solid, just a minor skim of filler needed on one of them.
Errr
That isn't 'high' standard in my book. Bit frustrating.
On the positive front it's an easy fix, they're good otherwise and way better than what I have.
Some peoples high standard are very often quite low in mine, I can see why you were less than impressed, I would be offering up the door to the car before I went any further, I seem to be getting the feeling than its OK to sell any old crap on Ebay as long as you add the words "untested" or similar vagueries to the ad, than just tell a spiel of lies about its condition

Not a bad call re trial fitting Ian, I may dig the hinges out and have a play. Mind you, if you rewind 12 months when I was messing with gaps, the existing doors weren't exactly a good fit from factory either!
Very true re any auction site, although these weren't eBay specials, they came from a member in a rather prominent role in the club. Not the end of the world, just another thing on the to do list which means more time, unfortunately that's the one element I'm lacking at present.
Still could be worse, I've a mini here at the moment (long story) that was supposedly solid and all the welding had been 'done'. Not an untruth in itself as it turns out, bar a few areas that need repair following shell treatment. The issue is that all the welding and 'repairs' now need to be 'redone'. Rather sad to see.
Ooooh I do love a weldathon....NOT, My present get running for the summer runabout has turned just into what I did not want, a weldathon, everywhere I look and find an old repair, clean it off with a wire wheel and the majority of the repairs are either sub standard or failing. but mostly covered in an underseal from hell,

That sounds rather familiar. I have also found seam sealer or some kind of mastic about 1" thick hiding holes then covered with underseal.

As mentioned on another thread, there's been plenty of running about of late and last weekend was again no exception. After a trip cross-country to the NEC and back on Friday, I was back on the road again Saturday chasing down some more car parts. This time with a Celica flavour.
Wind back a few weeks and I got a heads up from johnnybravo that there were some 2TG carburetors for sale on the bay of face. Unusual to see, and despite already having a set on my engine (albeit an unknown quantity at this stage), I thought I'd drop the seller a message, especially as they seemed a reasonable price. A fatal mistake
The response I then received was as follows:
"Still have the carbs, but lots of other spares too?"
Now the latter part of that sentence is what got my interest... looks like I was off to Crawley. (Why are they never local?!)
I had hoped to go the weekend before, given I wasn't far away in Redhill for the L2B VCR, but with the traffic that causes and timing with a few other family commitments it just wasn't meant to be, so I had to delay a week. Still I got there eventually and this is what I was met with when I arrived.
The temptation was to play Monopoly and just take the lot, but with only a limited amount of cash on me and ideally needing to do some research as to what is and is not easily available I thought the better of it. I therefore cherry picked out the bits I thought most useful to me at this stage and came to a deal. The rest could wait for some time with Google and some ideas around pricing.
So what did I get?
Quite the mix in the end but suffice to say some desirable bits for the right person looking so I more than covered myself .
The carbs obviously given they are what I went for, more on them in a bit, a spare front cover with the all important chain tensioner and water pump with a nice and smooth bearing (they are known to fail). and another rocker cover with oil cap, again tricky to find. Lastly gaskets, lots and lots of gaskets, in fact every gasket or so it would seem I need for an engine rebuild. Just when I thought I was done, I found another bag full of oil seals and collet caps. Nice. Seemingly they were all stored in a dealer box until the box disintegrated so got transferred into bags for (safer?!?) keeping.
So the carbs, on getting home I thought I'd cross check a few things from what I have already, the red labels on my existing pair show the following:
Consecutive numbers seemingly correct for a TA22 Celica 2TG engine from 1972. Interestingly this would date it as an earlier engine than my actual car, but then I always knew it was a hybrid of sorts as it should never have had the 2TG engine fitted and would have come with the less desirable 2TB.
The numbers on the 'new'/spare carbs are as follows:
Interesting. The 88240 would appear to come from either a Toyota Trueno, or later 1977 Celica although still a 2TG engine. Similarly the 88229 comes from either a Corolla or later Celica, but again 2TG, so bit of a mix and match going on there but seemingly not uncommon for it to happen.
I think I'll take the best of both when I rebuild them and then sell the rest on or keep them as future spares.
The front cover codes both match - Existing:
'New':
The only minor differences are the timing marks, where the existing cover has less:
and the spare more:
Everyday is a school day.
After a good look at the cars on the stand at the NEC for the 50th anniversary of the model I really must get on with this one. Time to break out the metalwork tools again and get that finished once and for all.

Little bit more shopping this weekend of something I spotted on the bay for the Celica.
The two metal examples I have are somewhat frilly having both rotted out on the front edge
Although they are repairable with the right skills and time, I figured this was something I could not only get the shaping from but also an opportunity for a little project I've been thinking of doing for a while. Yep you guessed it, this one is fibreglass and so can be 'tweaked'.
While there the seller mentioned he had a project car he was never going to get round to and was toying with selling, after a bit of a chat he opened the garage for a clear off and a better look. Even better was that he had some very desirable upgrades already that I was a bit jealous of but he didn't want to split (I did try).
If anyone is looking and fancies two owners from new project then let me know, despite the rough appearance it's got the better engine and is solid in all the right places with just some minor work required... unlike mine!
Wish my boot floor looked like that! Which reminds me, I need to do some chasing.
This was also sitting next to it, one he restored 15 years ago... but not for sale

So as some of you may have already seen in the Herald thread, the collection trip yielded a few useful spares for the Celica project too which I was able to squeeze on the trailer
Chief of which is a 2l engine from a Carina/Corolla with some familiar markings
but also several other useful parts
some of which are in remarkably good condition, with the original labels intact
Once the MG is out of the workshop once more this week I'll be back on the Celica for the foreseeable.

It's been a while...
So yes the welder was rolled out, and swiftly stolen by her ladyship for work on the A35
No matter though as it turned out it'd be a while before I stopped getting distracted by other things (see workshop thread) or found motivation to get back on it... not sure why, call it procrastination, call it distraction, but this project has been bothering me of late, just couldn't seem to find what I needed to do something... well anything. Perhaps as I kept looking at the bigger picture (so much still to do!), mistake #1, or just didn't know where to start and so analysis paralysis kicked in - mistake #2.
Anyway, last weekend it appears that the planets aligned and with nothing else planned I decided I needed to a least make a step in the right direction. So I started small, i.e. nothing revolutionary for some quick wins and hopefully sort a couple of easy jobs.
First the floor drain hole in the middle of the passenger footwell which is err 'frilly' about the edges
After a quick bit of CAD to get the size of the piece right, it was a case of dilling the right sized hole (I couldn't easily!), it was therefore a case of using my step drill to 20mm and then careful application of the dremel to do the rest. After use of the hole swager kindly made by a member of this parish this is what I was left with
Which will drop in here
On to a trickier repair then
Bit more CAD
Transferred to metal
and then the shaping, which after much manipulation resulted in something that was close
I could then drill the holes although the centre one still needs enlarging - I need a bigger drill!
Nice to be back on it, and feel a minor hurdle has been overcome.
Ah of course. A swaging die. I was calling what I wanted a dimple die. That's what I need for the floor of the 304, there are a few of them and the grommet/plug is a sort of top hat shape so that the outer lip sits inside the recess and the body of the plug protrudes through the floor. If I can't bodge anything I assume it was johnny bravo who made it for you?
