The Goodwood Members Meeting will be held over the 15th & 16th April 2023 - This is one of the worlds best historic race meetings - You wont get much closer the cars / drivers / action than at this meeting
I'll be in the pits on spanner / pit crew duties with this Jowett Jupiter

Hopefully you won't have to pitch your tent next to the generator this time or was that at Classic Le Mans ?
Ray - That was Classic Le Mans - I have the luxury of modern VW camper for this weekend complete with electric hook up that Richard is loaning me (who owns the race car) - he has friends that reside a few miles away that put him up - I was just going to put the air bed in the rear of the Range Rover and sleep in that rather than faff with the tent for the weekend but the use of the camper will be most welcome

Full Goodwood Members Meeting report coming (well as much as I can report upon) Please don't expect exotic in action race shots or fancy arty type pics along with covering everything else that happens at the event - its just my snapshot images captured on a non fancy camera phone whilst transversing & goforing between the pits / paddock / WC block / eateries all whilst preparing & attempting to keep a race car running / on track etc

So the vast majority of race fans and most certainly all the race teams that are not within a realistic travelling distance of the Goodwood circuit all stay over on the camp sites provided by Goodwood - We arrived at Midday on Friday to this utter mess of a swamp
Now I fully appreciate that Goodwood have absolutely no control over the weather along the fact that it had properly poured it down for 2.5 days prior to the event
This led to motorhomes / campers / caravans being towed into site by large tractors and placed onto bogged pitches all through Friday until well after midnight - Unhelpful was the sheer amount of clueless 4 x 4 owners who weren't even aware of how to select low drive or diff locks on their precious motors let alone of how to gain traction in such conditions
What Goodwood does have control over is ensuring the site is fit for purpose - for the last 15 years they have held 3 annual major motorsport events along with no end of track days / other events some of which use the same site - Had they started installing stone roads into the site at the rate of 500 metres a year to spread the financial cost for the first 10 years then they would have resolved 85% of the access issues and be in a position to mitigate the poor weather events - instead its just taken on a risk basis which reflects very negatively on Goodwood events team
Eventually we located the best spot that we could - I had the use of Richard's well equipped VW camper for the weekend
And managed to park the Range Rover up very close by - How the poor sods got on in the car parks I'm not quite sure but the tractor drivers were run ragged with mud well beyond their armpits and knees caked in mud from attempting to attach a strop onto the vehicles suspensions where a towing eye wasn't available
The car was in the paddock and the trailer deposited to the trailer park (another bog abyss of a field) But we had the back up plan that it could be recovered by Range Rover on Sunday evening if required
That is really quite poor for a major venue. Looking forward to more pictures and currently working my way through all the YouTube videos of this years event.
Chris, not here and not now but, at some point could you explain to this ignorant colonist the difference between the various Goodwood events. Goodwood is very much on my bucket list (as is the NEC Restoration Show) But what I thought was one event seems to be so very much more.

I was on chauffeur/guide duty so didn't take as many photos as I would normally would have, but did grab a few random shots. For catching up on all the on-track action, I recommend the Goodwood channel on Youtube, the S.F Edge trophy in particular was superb both days.
After a 3 hour trip to the carparks from Bedford, 2 hrs down and the last hour spent queueing along the lanes of the estate , we finally arrived to a thankfully dry GoodWood
First stop while it was quiet was a wander around the wares on sale from Bonhams, including this barn find 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 3.0-Litre Drophead Coupé Project
Sold for a £103,500
and this 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Le Mans-Style Tourer
which sold for a healthy £563,500 including premium.
There was a fair mix of lots, including some interesting race cars, several of which remained unsold, yet others went for strong money. Full auction results can be seen here.
After visiting Bonhams, and while on the hunt for some much needed coffee, we decided to stay 'outfield' and ventured towards the control tower cafe. While doing so I stumbled across this in 'The Governors' parking area, first time I'd seen one in the flesh and it's a nicely proportioned thing.
Trying to be cunning, we skipped past the usual outdoor catering in favour of somewhere more secluded in the hope it might be quicker, as the cafe was shut to non-VIP types, we instead headed for the teepees in the background of the above photo, which was rather civilised inside including a fire and TVs showing the racing
but just as busy... e.g. a 15 min wait for coffee
coffee eventually in hand, we decided to then head 'infield' and over to the assembly area where they were prepping the Bentley demonstration, have a photo of Tom Kristensen's backside
I also spotted this new electric mustang in the corner... nope, me neither
also waiting to go out amongst the porsche demonstration cars was heat 1 of the Gordon Spice Trophy (formerly Gerry Marshall Trophy), true to name it did get a little spicy, but you can watch the above channel for what that entailed.
Bentley demo over, we decided to wander into the paddocks to say hello to a certain member of this parish, passing as you do another collection of cars from the GMA (Gordon Murray Automotive) stable, those in the background under the marquee were some of the first cars he designed/developed
There were also plenty of 911 Porsche variants on display ahead of the 911 celebration
Fair to say I think I was then suitably distracted at this point as took no pics whatsoever, including of the two Brabham BT52 F1 cars. Still there is plenty online of what was about if you want to go hunting.
What I doubt some photo collections may include however, is a photo of the aero engined Mors, this was taking part in the formerly mentioned S.F Trophy race, and was stunning in its simplicity
Speaking of simplicity, you no doubt will be aware of what the 27 litre 'Beast of Turin' looks like, but have you ever wondered what the cockpit must be like? No, well regardless, wonder no more, just two small gauges to keep an eye on the important stuff
The afternoon meant to chance to pick a good spot and enjoy some of the racing, namely the Gurney cup and BT52 demonstrations, before a familiar vehicle took the the track for it's practice race. Was going well too from where we were
Others in the heat included a number of Healeys
Before hitting the road for a long drive home it was time to grab some sustenance from one of the many eateries around the circuit
and as the sun was shining I even treated myself to desert
Great day out, be nice to stay a little longer next time and make a proper trip of it, but for a first time visit I had a great day. I will be back next year and will endeavour to take more photos!
Chris, not here and not now but, at some point could you explain to this ignorant colonist the difference between the various Goodwood events. Goodwood is very much on my bucket list (as is the NEC Restoration Show) But what I thought was one event seems to be so very much more.
In short and as a very brief summary of the main three motor racing events:
Goodwood Members Meeting - A circuit racing event for the Goodwood Road Racing Club (GRRC) community, either full members or those belonging to the fellowship (essentially the main membership waiting list) and their guests. Races and demonstrations from a number of periods, from Edwardian racers to historic touring cars and everything in between.
Goodwood Festival of Speed - A hillclimb timed event celebrating cars and bikes right up to the modern day, from Nascar to Formula one and everything in between, including a rally stage at the top of the hill climb course. On the Sunday of the weekend there is a shootout to see who can claim the fastest time of the meeting up the hill.
Goodwood Revival - A historic motor race meeting at the circuit racing event for cars and bikes that raced in period (1940's - 60's), the only racing event of its kind in the world to be staged entirely in a period theme where visitors are actively encouraged to dress to the periods covered as well.

Hope that helps
And here's my much simpler take on the above events:
Members Meeting - A chilled out historic circuit racing event - A must if you are into historic motorsport
Festival of Speed - True petrolhead material interspersed with a large volume of nutters - way over commercial with too much leaning to the newer automotive offerings for my liking
Goodwood Revival - The worlds best historic & period race event which I personally treat as an annual pilgrimage

Some early wonderings within our paddock row - rare 'Buckler' which were originally built in Reading, Berkshire
And the row of much more exotic machinery in the paddock row opposite us
What always amazes me are the amount of people that walk directly past the exotica and make a beeline for the Jupiter - probably because they don't recognise the much more expensive machinery
But then again the Jupiter is also a fairly rare car - Only just over 900 built of which around half survive - There are always association stories being told either a close relative owned one in period or better still some genuine connections, One whose grandfather was a member of the Jowett factory design team for the Jupiter - Then a young lady who advised me that her grandfather was a member of the factory works team at Lemans when the Jupiter won the under 2 litre class over 3 consecutive years (1950 - 1952) - What she wasn't aware of is that a Jupiter in her uncles ownership has just spent the last 2 years in my workshop being heavily recommissioned (The ex Portuguese car) She left with a smile and the promise that she was off to pester her favourite uncle for the loan of his Jupiter
Whilst in the queue for lunch the Porsche 911's were returning to their paddocks from their 911 celebration demonstration laps
Hence I grabbed the pics whilst I could
Nice thing about the members meeting is that the paddocks aren't heaving - get your timing right and you can gain some fantastic pics of the cars - ask politely and the teams will answer all your questions - some teams giving the opportunity to younger family members to sit in the cars for pics to be taken - Only time that changes is when the cars are in final prep to leave the paddocks for the assembly area prior to their race - More later

so with both descriptions - first of all, thank you! (and thanks for letting me watch vicariously) - am I correct in assuming that the Members meeting is not open to the public? are the other two?

So the members meeting tickets can only be purchased by GRRC (Goodwood Road Racing Club) members - doesn't mean that you cant attend - you just have to know a member to invite you as their guest Myself, fer4l & toomanyprojects are members hence it would never be a problem - the Festival of Speed & Revival have tickets available directly to the public - However, tickets sell out fast and the events quickly become oversubscribed - Just ensure that you talk to one of us several months in advance if you were planning a visit - equally if you were wanting to make the most of your visit we could advise on times of the year where several events / must see visits could be accommodated on your trip
