1991 Volvo 240 Torslanda Estate - Running driving project - reasonable interior - externally cosmetically challenged but quite solid - would make a great parts hauler / tow vehicle - cheap enough to play with at £1,600

1979 Series 3 Jaguar XJ 4.2 - Tidy & solid enough requires minor recommissioning - decent cosmetics & interior could be improved but far from dreadful - being given away at this money £1495 or near offer - don't be surprised if its not already sold
Someone needs to find room for that Arnolt MG - Its very rare and its also very cheap at $10k - here's one that's on the road that's for sale in the US

1961 Austin Healey Sprite - Complete for restoration - Appears to be a good / sound project - Well worth the asking price of £4,500 - The registration number alone being worth close to this - although I hate splitting / valuing a plate above a car

Might you take a moment and enlighten a poor fellow from the colonies whi can't understand why the registration number is so valuable. (or why others are as well)

That's a huge question, and not without its controversies!
I'm just crawling out of post Covid fog but if noone else goes first I'll aim to pen a suitable answer as soon as time allows

Registration numbers in the UK change hands for substantial sums of money - sometimes hundreds of thousands - often referred to has private registrations - so in this case anyone with the initials of DD or who has a business that is titled DD maybe interested in acquiring the number to transfer to their own vehicle - A quick glance at just one private plate dealer reveals 1869 DD for sale at £4,250 & 1821 DD at £2445 the less number of digits in the number the more it will increase in value - The same dealer has 32 DD for sale at £39,000 - Some dealers purchase vehicles like this and transfer the number off the car and have a age related number assigned back to the car that holds little value and is non transferable - they then will sell the car on for more or less the same money that they paid for it but then go on to sell the plate that they took off the car - normally making several thousand pounds in doing so much to the distaste of the majority of classic car owners - Its big business here
I have a private plate on my tow vehicle but it was a licensing authority issue and not taken from a classic vehicle (it was also only several hundred pounds and not the the several thousands that most private plates change hands for)
I'll give it a go, especially as the Sprite is sold already.
UK registrations as issued are pretty meaningless, you can decode them to give the period of registration and where is was registered. But for example my old Land Rover at CRM776K doesn't mean anything or look cool, or relate to the owner or vehicle in any recognizable way.
HY14VSK - shows the car as a 2014 model - but if you buy and put on SIG299 - nobody can tell your car is 8 years old from the plate alone, so your car can appear to be newer and therefore more valuable than it is. Therefore a 'Dateless' plate has some value for example SIG299 is up for sale at £599 - possibly a bargain for Simon Ian Green.
The shorter and cooler the plate is, makes it more valuable.
The DVLA who issues the registrations doesn't allow true vanity plates such as JOHNNY or GRUMPY unlike the US and Aus.
But there are still some really good ones about BU11ETT - I saw in London PEN15 - I saw at Ally Pally at the Motorbike show - I think it was a GP riders plate V7 - a really old registration, saw on an old money Mini Clubman estate at Sandbanks
All of those are worth £10,000+ IMHO
I run D15ESL on my daily driver - didn't cost much, and was an in joke as we were all driving diesel Land Rovers at the time, and none of my mates could spell diesel. If it were actually D13SEL, for those that can actually spell, it was up for sale for £10K ISTR
The Sprite could be potentially separated from its original plate by re-registration. If the new owner would sell that plate, and end up with a different one, they could be several thousand pounds better off, but have lost the originality of their car.
Thanks for this - I assumed it was something like that - seems a lot of coin for initials. but I guess there are those with money to spare.
Mrs JP - on her first car (remember here the plates go with the person and not the car - and we can get personalized plates) Her first plate (just issued)
was TDO 100
a friend determined it meant Tori does 0 - 100% of the time.
PEN 1S was owned by Steve Parish..may well still be. How DVLA let that slip through the net i dont know.
The geographical interest in "local" registrations varies around the country i am led to believe. I know old Cornish plates are very desiriable in my own fair county. AF , CV and RL plates will always be snapped up. Many moons i picked up LCV 61E as an unusual anniversary present for the boss and it has adorned every of her cars since. I picked it up out of the classifieds in the local rag (thats how long ago it was) for the princely sum of £65! The last LCV **E i saw for sale was about 10 years ago and the seller wanted £1k.
