Mucking about with my A35 van at the moment, Prompted by the warm weather, and finding some new door card blanks, I have been looking for ages, even usable used ones just dont exist,... so my want is to cover the door cards with Rexene, a period cloth based, plastic coated sort of Leathercloth, its quite different in feel to modern Leathercloth in it is hard and cold feeling, feels a bit like sticky backed plastic, anybody know where to get some? The next thing, should not be too hard, I am using individual plastic letters for my numberplate, Im dictated as to what I can use because my back panel has been previously drilled to fit the letters, Again, Its taken ages to find a set of letters to fit, Blumels digets and letters eventually were found in BLACK Plastic, to be legal, I need silver on a black field, , the black field is easy, but after scuffing whats the best, hard wearing matt silver to paint the plastic figures with?
Ian - Try Martrim for your rexine - in general its no longer produced but vinide is - available in period grain types etc and has always done the job for me
Any good quality branded aerosol should do the number plate letters for you (avoid Hammerite or Plastikote) - but your largest problem will be the paint adhesion - From experience I would highly recommend that you use a aerosol adhesion promotor on the letters prior to applying the paint - adhesion promoters are great for such jobs as painting plastics etc - there's plenty of choice but again I'd go for a known high quality brand over a cheap no names imitation
Martrim, funny thing is I have an account with them, and for some reason, I had totally forgotten about them,

Ian, let me know if you want me to have a look in the spares here, we've got multiple doors and I'm sure there must be a usable set of cards in there somewhere, even to use as a template to make something from.
Subject to what my mates have been saying, Im yet again im back on the van, thinking about getting the loom for the ECU sorted, which has actually been now done bulkhead forward, just need to wire pump etc, then got thinking about setting the timing up, after having the engine standing for a while, Moving garages and making a multi purpose belt cover, I have lost a few bits, one of these bits being the small cover that has the timing marks on it, then I remember, I converted the pullies from Poly Vee belt drive to save front space for the rad, so I used a Vee belt assy from a earlier type engine, guess what?, timing marks dont match, Time to make me some timing marks, Broke out my DTI, blew the dust off, made a simple extension from 3mm welding rod so I could get down the plug hole and rotated the engine to TDC, with a crank sensor sitting where it is fitted, I dont have a lot of room for timing marks to be seen with a strobe,
so I have started making a calibrated timing strip, measured the OD of the crank pulley x 3.142 then divided by 360 gave me the size of each degree on my timing strip of 1.22 mm per deg, too small to be able to see with a strobe so I doubled it, and added a bit of artistic licence and took it to 2.5mm per 2 deg, Broke out the Vernier height gauge and turned the kitchen into a marking out table, (dont tell the wife!!!!!)
thats all for now, my back has gone twang this afternoon, see how things are tomorrow and see if I can finish it,
Ditto on the back. I don't mind a bad back if I have done something stupid and deserve it but very often I haven't done anything. Yesterday I got up at 7 feeling absolutely fine and somewhere between that and arriving in the kitchen there was a stab of pain. It was gone in seconds but 1 hour later I was in agony and not much better today. Family wedding this weekend so alcohol might numb things.
Things are moving on, Bigger, better painkillers help for the back,
Because of my Back, I wasn't keen on going over to my lockup and rummaging thru heavy boxes full of tools to find some good quality number stamps, so, I bit the bullet and went for Amazon Primes finest Chinese tat, Duly arrived in 24hours, went on to stamp some numbers on my scale,
Forgive the slightly wonky 0 the top quality stamps dont index correctly to the stamp so when I stamped the scale with a straight edge clamped on, the 0 came out p-ssed... so was I !!!!!
Marked out the TDC mark, ground a small groove with my Dremel and painted the mark.
