I purchased this for the wife some 8 years ago for £825! It owes me more than double that just now but I’ve done no work on it for a few years. Maybe once the mini is complete I’ll get back on it. Those with a nervous disposition had better leave now. It ain’t pretty!
As found
I literally saw this in the dark with no torch and jumped at it as they were already on the rise. This was a decision I’d later regret somewhat! Even a wash n brush up couldn’t disguise this was a rotten dog of a bus which was gonna take a LOT of work.
Even though this was a crossover, at some point in its life someone had done a front panel swap but instead of fitting blanking plates to the upper indicators this one had upper blinkers and low light indicators! Once the front was hacked off no one would be any wiser.
Looking underneath revealed the true extent of my idiocy!
I was beginning to regret this! Weirdly the other side was almost acceptable!
Having only done minor restorations on minis and a Mk1 Astra GTE before this I thought this was too much work for me and I’d bitten off more than I could chew! I rang Volksengineering in Cardiff who came up to view it and he said I’ve scrapped better, you’re better off scrapping this and buying a better rolling shell from me! Either that or I want £500 a week (roughly £4K) just to put the chassis right. My missus promptly burst into tears!
The only answer was to buy a few sections of chassis box section and some chassis plate and hope my welding was up to scratch!
I ordered a few sections of chassis rail and unpicked the spot welds on the floor and started cutting them back to fresh metal and extending to the finished lengths.
Not bad when it started off like this...(I know I have an early arch but late step on it but I prefer it over the later arch.
When it was still on its wheels I wanted to get a minor job done which had been bugging me! When I got it there was this small plate riveted pin the load area at the rear. Turned out someone had started trying to chain drill some holes one can only assume to get to the fuel sender below, then ran out of talent! A recognised mod is to fit a small hatch in there. I may do this later.
I was going to make a 'brave pills' quip but Strikey struck first! I will therefore simply observe that your wheelbarrow must have heavy duty wheel(barrow)bearings!

I'm very much up for challenges but I'd have turned that away from the Grumpy Towers workshop had it darkened my doors - don't let my comments put you off though - that's a very brave save for a home restoration & you have my full moral support

Yeah, as others have said, that's seriously impressive. I/brother scrapped a westfalia version that was probably similar in state to this and of a similar age (WWW 750L) - the clue was grabbing hold of the chassis to pull myself underneath and it came off/disintegrated in my hand!
On the plus side we still have a few spares knocking about so if you need anything just shout.
Hells teeth man!!! Did you have your supply of brave pills delivered by dumper truck?!
Amazing job so far. Are we anywhere near up to date or is there more tin-voodoo to come?
Oh, still a fair bit to come. I have left out quite a few pics as trying to catch up on 8 years of work there are bits in between but in the grand scheme it’s not a lot of extra work just plates here and there.
