BSA 3 wheeler rebuild carried over from introduction section

Love the colour scheme too - but then again it does seem quite familiar.

This car has been for sale for months in the club mag e.t.c, I think he must have seen some flying pigs because he probably has more chance of seeing one than anyone giving him that price.

I painted up the metal door stops - these are plated when supplied but I have had to reduce & rework them which in turn has left bare metal edges which would only rust - hence the paint protection 



Offside front wing apron flatted then part polished prior to fitting

Then the remainder was flatted 



Then polished 



Offside bulkhead section was also flatted 



Then polished this will now allow for the upper bonnet panels to be refitted 



Boot is now fitted back to its hinges & flatted 



It was all going well until I was onto polishing the final sections of it and started to notice some faint cracks appearing - impossible to photograph and hardly noticeable - unsure on the cause but the cracks are certainly deeper than the paint - Whilst most would send it down the road I simply cant do that - They may stay as they are and be fairly unnoticeable but they could also deteriorate - its a eyeline horizontal panel and there's no getting away from it - I'll rework / repaint it at my expense  - More later  

These things happen but it is devastating when they do after all your hard work. I am sure you will sort it Chris but to have to do things twice is soul destroying for you.
I know my next comment won't help but the chap next to our workshop did paint correction work for new BMW cars and all I can say is he was never short of new BMW's cars to sort out. So even under factory conditions thing can happen.

Still amazes me the difference adding a bit of paint/colour to things makes. A pain re the boot lid, but coming together very nicely indeed

Bulkhead rubber trim fitted - this acts has a cushion contact between the bulkhead & bonnet therefore preventing them damaging the paint edges 



Boot lid went back in primer & guide coat 



Bonnet side panels flatted 



Then first stage polished - note the masking tape to protect the paint edges on the louvres - which I would only ever recommend polishing by hand and unless you have a paint defect to rework - I would also avoid flatting them otherwise you stand a good chance of rubbing through the paint on the edges



The bonnet locks were refitted and then the panel fitted to the car 


 
 



Process repeated for the offside panel







Now on the home straight - I hope Derek's started to make some space in the garage ready for its return 

Boot lid now repainted - it will get refitted this morning prior to being flatted & first stage polished - more later 

Actually its great being able to apply skills that I was taught in my apprenticeship and that I virtually never use today (or for the last 30 + years) - 2 tone paint jobs are normally undertaken to swage lines / cut off points / trim edges or just simply a different colour body to that of the wings on older separate chassis / bodied cars - very rarely are they used to the effect on the BSA which must have been considered quite racy in the 1930's - having said that the era was somewhat influenced by the 'art deco' styling movement and there's very much a bit of this happening in the style of this paint job 

Does the rear wheel have a cowling to keep wet and muck out of the "boot"?
