This little packet landed saturday so I can start putting the carbs back together, not much there for £100!! I did splash out on the next size up of idle jets though, not sure why they call them idle jets as they are in use up to 3000rpm??!!
Oh, that's about double what I paid, though that was quite a long time ago. I suspect your new O-rings might be more suitable than mine, though I do have a nice Dellorto sticker on the bag.
To be fair it looks like I last did them 21 years ago and you used to get a sticker! all the old stuff was still in ok shape considering but the pump diaphragms looked their age but weren't leaking
A fair bit of rubbish in the bottom pump chamber of the other carb, everything cleaned up nicely but there is some areas where the aluminium has been eaten away which is a bit worrying
All done now, really pleased how they came up with so little effort apart from pulling them apart and dunking the bits in the tank, they are back on the car so just got to finish balancing and setting the idle mixtures, there are still a few alterations I may do to the jetting as I dont think its right at present but the jets are easy to change through a little access cover on the top of the carb
Many thanks - I'm just in the process of reorganising the workshop & replacing / adding some new bit of kit - this will be one of them
Well worth getting, I've a 22l version and it's been brilliant. It's also just large enough I can get the carbs in side by side.
One I got was similar to this one from amazon but the larger version. A Kettle of water in it to begin with works wonders.
ETA, the jar of the black stuff, are parts in a jam jar of petrol - saw this tip used successfully as it saves polluting the rest of the fluid and works wonders on small parts caked in rubbish.
Nearly got the carbs spot on running wise but still wasnt sure the idle jets were correct and as I said before these are in use up to about 3000rpm, when it was on the rollers many many years ago the guy dropped the main jets down in size and even though it made good power I always thought it ran out of puff so in todays post more idle jets and some main jets to have a fiddle with
Used to have twin 40 Dellortos on my Escort before going fuel injection. It's a mesmerising mix of idle jets, main jets, venturi and emulsion tubes. I had it running OK but not as good as on the Jenveys.

I keep thinking about putting injection and mappable ignition on the Firenza. I know Vauxhall intended to put FI on the next-generation Firenza, but that would have been mechanical. Trouble is, it runs OK at the moment (and I've got loads of other stuff to do) so it's difficult to take it to bits.

Funnily enough ive got this on the shelf ready to go, just need a pair of throttle bodies, the water temperature sensor is in the inlet manifold already and I had a return put in the tank when that was made, they dont make the Dellorto 48s any more so good ones do seem to fetch a lot of money which would cover a set of throttle bodies!
Oh, that's a pretty expensive bit of equipment. I was thinking either Megasquirt or I've also been pointed at Speeduino. I have a pair of old Dellorto 40s that I'd thought of using as throttle bodies, and get some injector mounts fitted to a spare inlet manifold. I was certain I'd got one somewhere that had the "humps" already in it, which would easily allow drilling for injectors, but I can't find it anywhere and I'm coming to the conclusion I must have imagined it.

The ECU came from Dave Walkers firm Emerald and was pretty reasonable back then but it was years ago when he first started to do them, they still support them so its ok to use, I think at the time injection was in its infancy and there wasnt much choice of throttle bodies which slowed me down, I think I was concerned about the inlet manifold runner lengths making the injectors too far away from the valves, putting the injectors in the manifold like you say would be ideal and I think there were other manifolds about with different runner lengths but finding anything may be a mission, going to stick with carbs for this year and maybe think about injection over winter

I remember buying "Practical Performance Car" magazine, and his "workshop tales" column was one of the most interesting bits of it. They started a series where they were converting a single-cam 2.3 Chevette to FI, but they blew the engine up and just gave up on it, and I stopped buying it after that.
I believe Terry Cobbold's HSR is on an Emerald ECU, but still running on carbs.

Dave Walkers workshop tales was one of the reasons I used to buy PPC magazine, shame now hes into injection stuff he doesnt touch carbs. Not seen that set up on Terry's car but thats exactly what I was going to do first off and in the dirty carb pictures you can see the throttle position switch ready for the ECU but in the end I didnt worry as it seemed a lot of work for basically ECU controlled timing.
Mirrors! to make the thing more useable it would be usefull to see behind just for parking and pulling out of road side parking spots and with no door mirrors and a weeny interior mirror that vibrates and shakes once on the move there is room for improvement!
So we have this, its quite big and looks like something that came out of the old peoples sunday supplement magazine along with big button telephones and incontinence pants!! that aside it was £18.50 delivered and its got some lovely CNCd aluminium mounting brackets to fit onto the roll cage so if I dont like the mirror I can use the brackets for a smaller mirror!
Mine's running on an Emerald K6 and 40mm Jenveys. Not had it rolling road tuned but did grab a base map and let it auto tune.
I like injection just from a driveability point of view, I wouldnt expect more top end power but at present it will have to wait until I can justify the additional cost, last time it was on the rollers we had 179bhp and 190 torques, I would like to compare it again since making the cold air box which seemed to make a big difference with noise and also the power delivery
Mine isn't making anywhere near that sort of power. It's a 1640 xflow, 1300 pistons, fast road cam and big valve head. Be around 110hp if i'm lucky. I've got the Mini if I want to go fast and the Escort if I want to go lairy.
Just about finished tinkering and its running sweet now, ages ago when I put the rebuilt distributor in my timing light broke so I set it by ear to get it going, had a friend stay over for a few days so he came armed with a timing light and it seems my hearing was 9 degrees out! now thats set and the carbs are sorted the thing pull like a train its a monster!! if you havent driven anything with this engine you probably wouldnt get it but they really are a grunty old thing, droopsnoot would understand! Dragged out for a quick wash as a local pub is doing a classic car meet friday so all being well its first proper outing for about 8yrs!
Well I didnt get to the pub show on friday as being self employed and working from home stuff happens! As its Monday and the weather was good I bunked off and took the car for a run out to Cadwell Park motor circuit, its only 15 miles from us and when they do general track days its free to get in, really nice picturesque track with a good club house, no Viva pictures but a load of bikes, Lotusesss, various hot hatches, fast and furious wanabees and the odd base spec car derived van that obviously new the circuit! Just a few pictures taken on the potato cam
The view from the club house
A nice Elan that was by no means quick but was nimble through the corners, made the others with 3000000 horsepowers look slow and unstable through the corners
