Right where were we...?
Ahhh yes, ECUs . After not getting anywhere with the code reading with anywhere local, at least not yet, I decided to invest in a service to test the roof/window ECUs themselves, seeing as I now have two, albeit neither as known entities.
I found a highly recommended seller of testing services, who charges £20 to test the ECU including return postage. Nothing ventured etc. I duly sent off ECU number 1. Turns out there was nothing wrong with it and so that one was sent back to me ready to go. Once received, ECU number 2 was dispatched, this time it was indeed corrupt/had issues, so an additional fee was paid for repair and that too is now back with me. So in theory I now have two 'good' ECUs.
I've not yet connected either to the car yet as I don't want the issue to reoccur without having the car checked, seemingly it could be a number of things - weak battery, faulty limit switch, blown fuse. Given the fuses have been checked multiple times and I've sourced a new battery the list is narrowed somewhat, I'll only really know when the codes are read so that's still the plan before things get connected.
In the interim the cars MOT date had been and gone, with both of the Discos needing theirs done too and with hints of spring back in Feb I stupidly booked it in with them, with the date looming it was time to get it in the workshop and checked over
All seemed to check out as expected, and let's face it, shamefully it's not done much mileage between MOTs in the last 12 months *cough* 165 miles *cough*... that really is a travesty as it's such a great car to waft about in.
As you may have noticed from the above, the windows are still firmly retracted in the doors and so while dodging the showers that's how it was delivered for checking, (all fine as this is only a requirement for Class 5 vehicles - minibuses etc.), it was b*stard cold though! the good news was that asides a minor oil leak it passed with no advisories whatsoever. A number of folk at the garage also commented on how clean it is, sadly no one wanted to buy it
So it's back on with getting the codes sorted, but at least it's mobile once more. There is a small hope someone in the car club locally has purchased a code reader for use with their similar era smart brabus, so will work on bribing them for assistance.
More soon... but in the meantime I must get out and use it more regardless of the window and roof situation!
