love the way this is heading. always liked the simplicity of those wheel trims.... but as you have spares!
just saying.
Thank you strikey, Iāve seen those caps before, as cool of an idea that they are, I donāt think theyāll fit the vision I have for the buildš
Iāll try to get another update in later... maybe suspension, with regards to suspension... how many suspension changes is *normal* on a build? Asking for a friend
Didnt think for a minute you would...it was just a good excuse to post them up!

So, suspension... mistake no.? Where were we? originally it had *(un)professionally shortened spax springs (you get the idea) and updated shocks, now the 80ās springs are double pig tailed, so when you shorten them they no longer wish to sit nicely in the strut, I slightly modified the seat, so it accepted the larger diameter of modified spring, the ride was surprisingly good, so with the initial idea being a cheap rebuild, why change? I did fit new shocks, new poly bump stops, blasted the springs, and casings, painted in dark sea grey and black.. fitted adjustable drop links new roller top mounts etc..
I also painted the new wishbones and associated parts..
Then.. after much thought, I knew I wasnāt going to be overly happy with the set up as the rest of the car had creeped into being of a higher standard (although, at this point the motor was reasonably standard, the previously mentioned spec didnāt happen until recently)
I made my mind up it needed coilovers, now, coilovers for these are expensive! Real expensive! (Ā£1800+) Thanks to the nature of the front strut casings, Iāve an abundance of front casings, so I figured why not make a couple of sets! I used mk2 escort conversion kits from one of the rally type distributors, had shocks made up by Gaz, I also brought the springs from them, I made three front sets for about Ā£600 all inš
With the fronts done, I needed a solution for the rears, I started cross referencing photos and information on the web trying to find something that I could use from a more popular model, the avants use a casing that bolts to the wheel arch tub, I found the some vectras also used this method, but, coilovers for vectras were about as popular as Audi 80āsš¤¦āāļø Then, I accidentally stumbled upon an add on eBay, Mk3 golf estates!! A very similar design, coilovers readily available, in fact, the seller sold me three sets for around Ā£100 per set! They worked perfectly, they bolted up into the Audi housings with no issues at allš
And of course... they had to be painted, in dark sea grey, to keep with the theme, starting to get boring š¤£
Excellent, thatāll be a good job jobbedš stance was perfect, fitment was bang on, well done me, *pats self on back... But waitš¤¦āāļø
Iāve driven lowered cars all my life, Iāve only ever owned one car that wasnāt lowered! (I like them proper low, not no -60mm rubbish)
Emma however, sheās only ever driven standard ride height vehicles.. She got to the point of now worrying about it being finished and driving it, so much work effort and time had gone into everything she was worried she would break or damage it! āOk, itās got adjustable suspension, we can just raise it upš then youāll be able to drive it yeahšā
Nah, that looks Chocolate sprinklesš.... the savage response she gave
Ok... so what can we doš¤
TA technix was the solution, their all singing all dancing top of the line kit, ecu controlled, which in itself is incredibly adjustable, 0.5 psi increments to dial in the front/rear heights, four presets, extremely easy to set up! To say I was impressed is an understatement! (We were so impressed, we applied and got accepted to be a dealer for themš) I wasnāt ridiculously expensive either!
So, of course, I stripped it all down, prepared it all, and painted it all....
DARK SEA GREYš¤¦āāļøš¤¦āāļøš¤¦āāļø
Iāve a video of it in action but Iām struggling to upload it? Any helpš
And hereās a few with some of my TSW wheels, for some unknown reason, Iāve developed a like for late 90ās TSW wheels and I seem to be hoarding themš
The TSWās are not staying, neither is the black bonnet, (the black is actually black primer with a quick clear coat on it, my per hate is wibberly wobbly bonnets, this process helps get it as straight as my skill set will allow š )

Thereās loads of details and work Iāve left out, itās been a 4yr build on and off, first 6 months I was flat out working on it with every spare minute and every spare penny thrown at it, saving for the more expensive parts slowed the build.. then, an opportunity to start my own business seriously held everything up! I say all this as going back through my posts itās a bit retrospective and all over the place!
But, as my memory allows Iāll add details etc along the way... promise š
Next up Interior.. I wanted a certain look, I want certain front seats, early Audi S4 (100/A6) seats to be exact, to use these I just need to adapt audi 80 bases onto the seats, but and bolt job, I thought anyhow š¤¦āāļø Lots of messing around and eventually I had them bolting in as per the standard seats.. best part is, they look exactly like the standard 80 seats, just with lumber supports and the pull out extension base... absolutely not worth the hassle! Ha
On to the Upholstry, I knew I wanted tartan and leather, I knew I wanted ribs as per Porsche seats, Emma and I deliberated over tartan choices for far to long, settled on something we hoped would work, and, ten ordered the hides.. once I recovered from the cost of the hides (Ā£1200š³) we got a local firm to carry out our wishes...
Just realised this is the only photo I have of the front seats! Iāll grab some more tomorrow.. please do excuse the random mess, I was excited to see how they looked!
Rear seats are the standard 80 Avant seats, trimmed to match
The leather needs a little heat here and there to pull it up nicely, but Iām super happy with the whole lookš next I butchered the door cards so I could trim the pads in matching tartan..
next up was the boot air install/stereo speakers etc.. like the actual upholstery work, this was another task I farmed out, namely because Bobby, the guy responsible for the install has done a few for me, heās great at what he does, and, itās fun having him around for the time it takesš
we thrashed out ideas, the requirements were air system in and on display, amps on display, retractable load cover needed to retained etc, and, most importantly, access to the spare wheel!
This will be trimmed in a mix of tartan and veltrim, with the load cover pulled Chocolate sprinkles, hopefully itāll look reasonably standard š
few weekends ago I extracted a digit and finally *finished the last of the paint, and, reworked some parts..
it actually felt good to get the last bits into colour, I think due to the length of the build it felt a bit to much like a chore.. but this has reignited the drive to get onš
With all those last bits done, I pulled an all nighter one weekend and......
Iām told thereās bank holiday coming up this weekend... thatās 3 full days playingš

Thank you grumpy and strikey! If youāre an Audi guy strikey, you may like my other cars/projects...
I do keep meaning to stick up other threads about them, I would stick them in here, but I feel it would get confusing as two are also avants, all three are B4ās, one B3 90 and all four are red! Yep, four red project Audiās make me the subject of ridicule from my close friends... The B3 is a 90, gone is the NG, replaced with a VR5 that breaths through an Eaton M62, and is backed by a six speed TDI gearbag.. right at the beginning of this thread, the Avant with the black roof, thatās now a Quattro thanks to a B5 S4 rear end, itās also got a TDI six speed, and itās driven by a 4.2 40v V8.. the 90 was finished, then got broken, and itās in bits currently.. the V8 Avant is still very much and project.. then thereās the Daily Avant, I will at some point throw up threadsš
(oh, and we also have a Audi 90 Quattro sport.. in desperate need of a restoration, itās very much a *do I, donāt I car..
So... managed a 40hr session this weekend gone, little tired right now so Iāll put some photos up and allow them to do the talkingš
Interior mostly done, I need to fit some tweeters where the old window winders used to be, finding the correct door cars was almost impossible, so needs must, the two gauges are air and boost, the pods are 3D printed, I like them there, tempting to go the three pod as per V6 and S2ās, but... I like theseš
I managed to build most of the exhaust, now, Iām not a Tig welder, normally at work I prefer gas welding (exterior panel work, structural I prefer Mig) I own a Tig set, but I never use it, so please, be forgiving when viewing... oh, and excuse the messš¤¦āāļø Itās been a long weekend š
I also managed to change the discs and pads, Mtec sorted the parts, you wouldnāt believe the faff in getting red stuff pads!
Lastly, my boy Dexter kept me company for the whole weekend, but Saturday afternoon tho, heād had enough and decided he was chilling in the parts carš¤£š¤£

Evening all, small update, Iāve done loads of little bits but nothing worth an update, until yesterday, yesterday saw the exhaust completed (still would like to make a stainless down pipe) I then hung it on itās extremely time consuming custom mounts! very happy with it!!
I was so excited to hear it, so I attached the fuel lines, added oil and coolant to the correct areas, primed the turbo, force feed the filter some brand new diesel, attach the new battery.....
prayed a little that Iād be spared any fires.... Iāll mention that it hasnāt run since I turned it off seconds after the crash some five years ago.. (checked everything, practically rebuilt everything... but... we still worry donāt we!)
first kick of the key, it burst into life!! Then died as it obviously emptied the pump, another kick of the key, 5 seconds and it firedš overjoyed!! It was a little tappy, but after a few heat cycles, it settled!
See the mid mount overkill! This lead into the down pipe..
Mocking up .... it does actually sit straight.. promise
I beefed up the lower part of that mount after I accidentally pulled on it and realised it wasnāt as strong as Iād hopedš¤£
The finished tail pipe... I need to get it on my bigger ramp now, once I have Iāll fire up some more photosš

Back for an update, seems after a few years of messing around, I only went and *finished it, I say finishedā¦. You know the scoreš¤¦āāļø
first up, mostly finished the interior! Everything fitted up, trimmed, etc
(my friend Bobby finished the install up! Blokes a bloody genius)
The little heart cutouts, they are to pull up the hatch for the spare wheel, and, they are stainless cookie cutters, Ā£2 of an auction siteš
I do have some plastics to swap out, bits to paint, stuff to change, but thatās normal right?
I got it running, fettled a few things, but Iād get an odd discharge from time to time, engine would run fine, then, in a matter of seconds it would drain the battery flat, to the point of not even powering the ecu, this actually at first made me think I had something serious going on with the motor! Iād get a horrendous detonation knock as it diedā¦ Thankfully it happened!! Why thankfully, because I pulled the front end off to check the belt and timing, to find, the belt adjuster hanging on by itās teeth to the last parts of its bearing! A Brand new partš”
With that fixed, engine timed it restarted perfect, but the discharge still persistedā¦ (I should add, it would be totally fine, start run day after day, then, completely at random it would drain incredibly quickly) I started to wonder about how much I was asking of the battery and alternator, the twin compressorsā are a whopping 38 amps each! The sound system is 30 ampsā¦ I was sure I had a 120 amp alternator (brand new, but 3yrs ago, never run) I decided to be sure if would just bite the bullet and get a new one, 120ampā¦
It arrived quickly, I splashed some paint on it, while that was drying I got busy stripping out the other oneā¦
Andā¦
What did I find? A broken post for the switched live for the regulator š¤¦āāļø Broken right at the base, but still contacting at times.. my thinking is as it was flapping about it damaged the regulator and switched from being a charging motor to a driving motor, fighting the running engine, then destroying the charge in the batteryā¦ any insight to this would be great, I think Iām kinder probably rightš¤£
Swapped in the new unit, bingo! Perfect every time! Only a weekend wasted too!
Mostly back together..
Few little road tests later, we are good to go, MOT timeš¬
PASS Zero advisories, just a little tickle with headlamp aimš
First nervous outing was to our local meet classic car show
I was completely taken back by how it was received, so many people having positive comments, it made my year!!
Emma has since out a comfortable 500 miles on it, and now, itās sat on the ramp for a small list of changes, first up was modifying the front struts, they like to get a bit personal with the wheel wells, damaged my paint didnāt it justš”š”š¤£
(Well you do go stupid low I was told)
Exhaust, Iāve got polyurethane cotton reels, my god they are hard!! No give at all, so it transmits a bit of exhaust vibration though the car!

I'll be the first to admit that the lowered / slammed to the floor scene simply isn't my bag at all - but I'm very much of a each to their own opinion - it is whatever pleases the owner of the car after all - What really gets me more than anything is work that is ill thought out and worse still carried out with next no effort in regards to the quality of workmanship. None of which applies to this thread / vehicle / owner(s) in the slightest - just because a certain style doesn't suit my own tastes doesn't prevent me from admiring the passion, commitment & quality of workmanship that's gone into this particular motor which is nothing short of superb - well done - Now about the next one - can we be treated to a thread on it please
