Hello people!
It all started with this, my first B4, my daily.. extremely cherished, protected and loved, but it was starting to show a little ageing, so I decided to take it off the road for a light recommissioning... mistake No1! (That was 9yrs ago🤦♂️)
I really missed driving it, so when another super cheap (£134) one became available locally I snapped it up, plans were to refresh it a little, and daily it - refresh being.. replace the motor and gearbox (with a later B5.5 none PD ahu) Fit a better interior, rebuild the brakes, suspension, stereo etc Mistake no2
That got me roughly here
I was super happy with it! Loved it as it was clean enough to enjoy without over worrying about it getting dinked in car parks!
But then... a little mishap 🤦♂️
Coming home from Stratford one evening, on a road I knew very well, road went right, I went left.. up an embankment, across a large green, into some hedges... a split second glance in my rear view mirror causing a momentary lapse in concentration! I was awarded Two broken thumbs, with a stiff telling off from a police officer.. Said officer seemed more annoyed I’d ruined the car than anything else, and scoffed as I said I’d rebuild it- mistake no3
The plan was to repair as cheaply as possible avoiding a full repaint, so I could get back to daily driving and not worrying on it... mistake no4
I brought a bad saloon and removed the entire front end, inner wings, chassis legs etc, and replaced everything bent and broken on the Avant shell! Then, it got a little out of hand... Mistake no5
There’s loads more, if there’s interest I’ll carry on😎

Firstly welcome to BRM and thanks for posting up your project - you keep posting away they will be more than enough interest - we have a easy way of posting your images full size rather than as thumbnail attachments - link to the guide below but any problems with posting just say and one of the admin team will be along to help
but it was starting to show a little ageing, so I decided to take it off the road for a light recommissioning...
Yes, that was my story as well. Pop this one in the shed so I can sort out the problems while running something else, then fast-forward a few years and do the same.

So things crept, project creep etc! *this post hasn’t got any mistakes... but, fear not more will come My girl wanted to help out, so we painted little bits, then she painted bits, she then helped prep the engine bay, at this point, it became a “project”, so we would need to blow it over, Emma (my girl) helped with a few bits on the exterior, had a go priming.. it’s actually great having her help along!
She even put down the gripper coat once we were ready for the top coat😎
With the engine, specs are - 1999 Passat 1.9 TDI AHU (I had to weld lugs on the block to keep the correct 1Z water pump) custom plenum Complete EGR delete with an earlier none EGR exhaust manifold Ported head All steel triple layer HG Double valve springs .216 injector nozzles 11mm pump head Turbo technics hybrid turbo (machined out internally for larger compressor, 360• thrust bearing etc) Front mounted intercooler PiperX panel air filter 2-1/2” custom stainless exhaust the only thing I haven’t done myself on the motor was the plenum, one of my best mates sorted this for me! Thank you Matt Clarke
Emma helped all they way through, in fact she’s been the driving force all the way through this one😎

Always nice when the other half is supportive with our passion - simply couldn't achieve what I get done without the involvement / support from her ladyship - and there's quite a few on here of equal footing - That aside your Audi's going to make for a well sorted motor

Very nice work. The engine looks lovely, and that's from a petrol guy!
I have the opposite. Madam has no interest in cars except as a means of transport. On the upside side, she does "get" my interest in them, so therefore has no problem on what I spend, or the time I use.

Thank you for the kind comments 😎
After investing so much time *accidentally... I started to ponder on how to style it, make it stand out, but with being subtle (from the outside) This car was an SE edition, spec’d with electric windows all round, roof bars, front fogs etc.. I wanted to give it a povo spec look, but low! On the B4 avants they all had colour coded bumpers, clear indicators etc, so I wanted black bumpers, orange indicators as a start, then banded steels with plastic hub caps😎
I took a chance on B3 indicators and rear lights fitting, interesting fact.. B4 saloon rear lights will not fit an Avant! Audi never made an official B3 Avant, but! B3 saloon rear lamps do fit the B4 Avant 🤔!
Luckily They fitted and looked incredible, to finish it off, I searched high and low for a good rear reflector panel from a B3 Audi 90 (I now have three excellent condition panels😅)
With the steels, Paul up in Warwick (of vintage diesels fame) carried out a perfect job on the standard 80 15” steels, then as with all my cars and their wheels, I glossed them up in dark sea grey
Ive scored three sets of hub caps, but as yet I haven’t painted them, why three sets? Both Emma and I find curbs🤦♂️
love the way this is heading. always liked the simplicity of those wheel trims.... but as you have spares!
just saying.
Thank you strikey, I’ve seen those caps before, as cool of an idea that they are, I don’t think they’ll fit the vision I have for the build😎
I’ll try to get another update in later... maybe suspension, with regards to suspension... how many suspension changes is *normal* on a build? Asking for a friend
