Jowett Javelin - Can you just sort this out for me

Yes its a clients colour choice and quite a modern one too - but each to their own - rear lights area also non original too 

Soul-destroying - hope it doesn't fight you too hard

poor old girl , she's had a rough time by the look of it. where is your starting point/datum likely to be chris?

Sadly it gets worse 

So where to start then - well the front wings are the least adjustable without a huge amount of work with them meeting the vertical apertures of the front panels - horizontals of the bonnet & bulkhead then the vertical aperture of the A post therefore I start at the A post aperture and work to the rear - so removal of the rear wing first 



Which has been repaired but whoever undertook the repair failed to fabricate & weld the vertical wing mounting flange that bolts and retains the wing to the D post 



Instead a bracket of sorts has just been bodged to the base of the wing in attempt to retain it in place 



Brackets to the D post have been replaced but going on the size the holes drilled are completely out of alignment



The flange edge of where the rear wing bolts up to is just bare / unpainted / unprotected filler - bolt holes again way out of alignment and obviously way oversize for the task intended 


 
Then there's this piece of workmanship undertaken at the very rear of the rear inner wing - they have managed to delete the bumper iron mounting apertures in the process 



The inner face of it is no better 



I'm going to have to remove the ply floor in order to ensure I can access everything - its retained by miss match of fastenings and it has not been sealed or bedded to the sills / chassis rails to prevent water ingress either 



Revealing yet more questionable welding 



Nearside rear wing was also removed - some of the structural welding has been undertaken to a good standard & neatly dressed back 





But they have still managed to delete the rear bumper iron mountings 



So back to the nearside 



Front & rear doors both hang off the B post and on the same hinge plates - these have been fitted with the incorrect pins 



Both nearside doors removed 



Both the top & bottom hinge plates are incorrectly secured - I needed to remove them and resolve the issues to allow the doors to hang correctly from the B post before I can proceed with the aperture gapping's



With the wrong fastenings used I re-tapped the threads on the upper hinge plate  



Removed the rust ingress from under the bolt heads on the B post 



Then primed the area prior to refitting the hinge plate with the correct dome head machine screws 



Bottom hinge plate aperture should be a neat slot - its far from that



Again I re-tapped the lower hinge plate to accept the correct fastenings 



Aperture holes at the bottom of the B post are again some way out of alignment and way oversize 



With the hinge plate held in place by one of the screws I realigned the apertures by making up reducing collars from suitably sized nuts with the flats reduced off them 



These were tack welded into place 



Then the hinge plate refitted to check its location



Having access to another 3 Javelins at present to confirm this is very helpful 



Tomorrow I can fully weld the collars in and dress them back & then refit the doors in order to start checking the door fits & apertures  

It should straighten up ok but in other news - On checking the quality of the paint finish - its quite thin on the edges so much so that there is visible rust ingress on virtually all of the panels - taking into consideration that this car has not seen road use since its was returned from being painted by a previous repairer  it is more than disappointing 

Do you ever advise that it is too far gone? Seems like you could find a much better starting point for less money, even if you transfer the mechanical gubbins. If I look at this for instance, I wonder if it wouldn't be cheaper to buy it, even as a starting point because you have a lot of work just getting the pieces to a base line in terms of fit and lack of bodgery.
