Some of the special order / bespoke parts are starting to arrive at the workshop for this one - first one turned up today
Lucas DM2 distributor fully rebuilt but with a mapped curve to deal with modern fuels - repairs to the steering column are advanced, column gearshift & water pump are complete but these are all with the same engineer and everything will be sent back in a single package - looks like the longest lead time will be the wiring harness which is still several weeks away

Another delivery in today of some of the re-engineered parts required for the car
Steering column & steering rack pinion have been reworked to accept a modern type UJ - the old UJ's are no longer available - a new pinion bearing has also been fitted
Top of the column has also been subject to work along with a new horn slip ring / pick up point which is about a third of the way down the inner column
A refurbished column gear change
New high capacity water pump - carries the same external design to that of the original but has much improved internals / flow rates
Fuel filter spin on conversion - non original equipment but it goes completely unseen
New wiper motor mounting for the Lucas CRT wiper motor that is currently fastened bodged to a piece of wood on the bulkhead

Still acquiring parts for this before I get stuck into it
The new bonnet struts arrived this week - new alloy radiator should be with me next week - still finding it difficult to attain responses / firm delivery dates from Autosparks for the wiring harness & some electrical components & Speedograph Richfield for the dashboard instrumentation restoration & calibration along with the control cables - both companies appear to hiding under the same 'Covid' excuse blanket

Virtually all of the service items / brake / clutch / fuel & suspension components have now arrived from Jowett Car Spares - still awaiting the radiator, wiring harness & restored instruments from 3 external suppliers which I am now chasing heavily
I had forgotten about this one but nice to see some of the parts finally arriving. I don't think suppliers can use the covid excuse anymore as everyone is pretty much back working as normal although there is bound to be a backlog to catch up with.

New custom built all alloy radiator arrived yesterday - still awaiting the wiring harness before I can get going on this one and 'Autosparks' are still flying under the radar of covid and lack of staff excuses so its yet still six weeks away from the six weeks lead time that they quoted back in January

I have been rattling a few cages of the specialist suppliers (yet again) so this delivery turned up today
Rebuilt choke cable but using the original knob that matches the rest of switchgear on the dashboard
More importantly the restored dashboard instruments
Annoyingly there's dust & marks on the inner glass face of the tacho from when they reassembled it - I can sort it but I shouldn't have to - and whilst they have restored the faces of the instruments they have left the numerals of the odometer itself untouched / discoloured and they stand out like a sore thumb amongst the crisp fresh faces of the rest of the instruments - this is one of the main players in the UK market for instrument restoration and they have run from one excuse to another with countless delays - I'll be finding a new supplier for any future works - Another cage I had rattled was the custom wiring harness supplier and I have just had note that they have despatched it along with several other items that I had ordered from them for this particular car - lets just hope that they haven't done half a job either - although they have been hiding behind the same delay excuses as the instrument supplier
Shame about the instruments, cant believe these companies are still milking the covid excuse
Brexit, Covid, Pingdemics, Staff that they treated badly during the pandemic that wont return to the job that they were dismissed from (What a surprise), Lack of HGV & delivery drivers, HS2 commanding the market on cement & civil engineering products leading to short supply & no stock elsewhere, Ships grounding in canals - I'm sick of the excuses that I come across daily - ok some are legitimate and out of their own control but its the fact that the specialist suppliers that I'm using will only accept an order with full upfront payment - I accept that may have issues but they are utterly & totally useless at communicating with the client - Its always down to me to do the chasing only to find when someone does answer the phone or respond to an e mail the book bible of excuses gets opened yet again - Grrrr (Wiring harness supplier has had full payment for the order since February)

Wednesday's round trip to Yorkshire to deliver the Zephyr Convertible also meant that I could collect some of the final parts for this recommission - custom built wiring harness
Along with a Dynamater, gear reduced starter motor & a new control box which in effect is a dummy it just holds a fuse for the dynamater circuit
I've got the same starter in my Morris. It works well, but depending on your access - getting the spade connection on the solenoid is a trial. I have to do mine by feel - take a good look/picture whilst it is on the bench in case you have the same.

The Jupiter has been very patiently awaiting its turn in the workshop schedule - a few issues with parts suppliers and my back injury means that I'm a month behind where I wanted to be with the car
But late afternoon it got loaded to the trailer and its now back at the workshop awaiting unloading tomorrow - then it will be going into the workshop over the next few days - Looking forward to getting cracked on with it

The car has been under a dust cover whilst in storage at the barn but its still acquired a light dust on the paintwork
I gave it a quick wash off whilst it was on the trailer
Then backed the trailer up to the workshop to allow the car to roll directly into the workshop once the ramps had been extended
First job with the rear of the car up in the air is to remove the fuel tank which requires the removal of the spare wheel carrier
I want to clean the tank internally and ensure that its free of any contaminates - once done I'll also be applying a fuel tank sealer to it - the hose that connects the tank to the filler will also be replaced with a new one that is ethanol rated
The hose, connection to the fuel gauge & the supply pipe are all very restricted in access
In order to ease the access situation the luggage box requires removal
Some days when you are working on your own you just have to get inventive
with some of the trim peeled back I could drill out the pop rivets that retain the face of the box
Box removed
Which afforded much better access but this tank has been modified to 2 pick ups rather than the one that it would have left the factory with
Tank removed
Hmm, so the question is why ?
Traced the pipes and found a 2 to 1 valve which is not original but looks like its been there a long time - It could possibly be a period race modification where the tank supply could be quickly swopped over to use the second pickup - I'll be replacing all of the fuel lines so this valve will be deleted / removed and I'll blank one of the pickup's off
The tank itself is very sound and just need the internal treating, a clean up externally and new webbing for the tank straps
The Le Mans style fuel filler is correct for the car but fitted incorrectly - it was just held on to the rear shroud panel by the filler hose alone when the filler neck should be fitted to the underside of the panel and the chrome cap ring then screwed onto the neck in order to clamp the the panel between the 2 - Providing I can get the the 2 to unscrew apart it should be fit to go again
Making notes before I lower the rear of the car back down
The silencer box to the rear pipe looks like its been blowing and requires the clamp arrangement sorting
And the tailpipe bobbin mounting is splitting
Moving onto the front one the next jobs is to remove the engine & gearbox - its having the clutch replaced but with the engine & box removed I have much better access to the engine bay whilst I sort the wiring harness / pipes / fittings etc
The current fuel pump setup is nothing but bonkers - placed on the bulkhead directly behind the radiator and where all the engine heat is directed - if this set up doesn't suffer from fuel evaporation I'll be amazed and just look at the size of that filter set up - The pumps were originally mounted to the chassis at a midpoint on the offside and that's where the new pump will be going !
