A recent arrival at the workshop - all the way from the Netherlands
Although its on a Portuguese registration index - Its right hand drive and initially I assumed it had been exported to Portugal in the last 20 years or so - certainly for the last 20 years it had been part of a large private classic car collection - the collection was disbanded a little over 12 months ago and each vehicle sold individually at a specialist auction - a classic car dealer purchased the vehicle and recently my UK client purchased the car from the dealer. Its now been delivered to me for assessment & recommissioning - its been restored to reasonable standard but lacks a few details - the clock is missing from the speedometer, its fitted with a nice custom made tonneau cover but the hood for the car is missing in its entirety - fairly well presented but it arrived with a flat battery and as soon as I got it running the accelerator cable snapped - I have yet resolve this but will hopefully be in position to roadtest it over the next few days.
Just before the car left Holland for the UK it was featured as the front cover & 8 page centrefold car of the Dutch specialist magazine 'Klassiek & Techniek'
Originally fitted with Zenith VM30 carburetors its been converted at some stage in its life to a pair of Webbers
With only just over 900 Jupiter's built between 1950 - 1954 and only around half of that of number surviving they are rare little cars and much sought after - the new owners are also new to Jowett ownership - however the owners father worked for Jowett Cars at the Bradford based factory hence the car is very sentimental purchase
The car arrived with little history - just the registration papers really and a copy of the magazine that it recently featured in - so I thought I would do a little research of my own - its quite an early car and I was wrong in assuming it had been exported to Portugal over the last 20 - 30 years or so - the car was registered new in 1951 with its current registration index and then 'BINGO'
This is no ordinary Jowett Jupiter
This is the outright winner of the 1951 Lisbon Rallye Internacional
Beating 63 other highly competitive cars such as Jaguar XK120's, Porsche 356, Allards, Aston Martin, Delahaye over the highly demanding 2,000 mile route
More once I get the car running for its road test
