So this one is in the queue for attention at some stage
Purchased by one of my clients as a part completed project
The majority of the work has been undertaken to a reasonably good standard on a restored chassis with a rebuilt drivetrain - new ash frame & rear panels
I collected the vehicle from the previous owner and then transported it down to Devon to my clients workshop
And he has since been busy completing the drivetrain & chassis
Meanwhile the front body panels came back with me
And I stripped & separated everything into individual components
Carefully labeled everything up and then sent the lot to my blasters and left with them for several weeks
Then today went and collected everything that had been blasted & primed - I'm still several months away from really getting stuck into this one - buts its on the list - a few others are in front of it though
Is the Utility the one with rear seats making it an early MPV?
Karl
Karl - Very much so - the whole idea being that they were very much multi purpose - the rear seats on most of them folded forward to provide load area when required - here's one I restored a few years ago

This has been tucked in the owners garage for a while - he's progressed all the work on the chassis & drivetrain and its now in running order and its time for its body & paint to be sorted
So a trip with the trailer down to Devon today to collect it in advance of the works commencing shortly - its one of 2 new projects due into the workshop (Ok one of them has already seen some time in the workshop but its due back in for the second phase of works)
Delayed travelling down due to a accident by an hour I was hoping for clear run back
But it didn't go that way - A hour from home I noticed that the Range Rover was well down on power & speed climbing the hills that it normally romps up - found a layby after a few miles and a dead tyre on the trailer - cue lots of faff disconnecting the hitch on the trailer to allow me to get it high enough on the jack in order to change the wheel -
The speed at which all this happened had me confused at first and then I saw the date on the first post. Don't remember seeing this before but maybe I wasn't a member of the forum at that time.

Radiator cowl completed
These front lower quarter panels bolt to the cowl then connect to the inner wing panels along with the front wings
These have also been got at with snot weld all over the place - the panels are distorted and well out the true profile that they should be
Some hours later dressed back and loosely reshaped
There's a piping bead that goes between the two panels
I need to see how it all aligns with the chassis and wings next - The bottom of the radiator cowl & the quarter panels will be shaped & dressed with body solder to match / even the profiles up but again better done on the chassis

I did a little more work to the quarter panels to achieve a better radius profile against the radiator cowl - I'll lead load this area to bring it closer to the final profile
So I'm now on with the front wings
Like most panels heading for 70 years old they have had a life
Battered in places
And rust perforated in other areas
The edge flanges always rust out
Some basic bashing to remove the worst of the impact damage - the remainder is better dealt with once the wing is bolted to the van
First section of the flange edge repair welded in - more tomorrow

Now working from front to back on the flange repairs
Which in some areas also require repairs in to the wing panel itself
Its much easier to section areas and form the repair pieces prior to just cutting everything away - this allows you follow the original profiles
Soon tacked in
Then dressed back
If the removed section is in one piece it can always be retained for pattern for repairs to the opposite side or identical panels
Nearly completed the flange
The factory dressed 3 swages into the flange in order to stiffen it up and maintain the radius profile
Next was the end panel
For which I already held a pattern
Soon made up and let in - the factory spot welded this section which I replicated
Just this small edge repair to now let in
Welded in - I'll dress it back in the morning
Which just leaves this bracket mounting area at the base of the wing to repair then the wing can be set aside prior to being trail fitted
The impact damage to front nose of the wing is much better straightened up with the panel bolted to the van which will allow the area to be worked with a hammer & dolly
I always like to clean the weld beads back on the underside but you need to be careful that you don't overthin the metal around repaired areas - once the wing is in primer I can seam seal the repaired areas prior to adding a underbody wax to protect the underside of the wings

Now progressing the offside front wing
Similar to the nearside the flange edge is very much affected by rust perforation
And the end plate is very much thinned by the fact that the road wheel throws water & road debris straight at it
With the initial repair completed I checked the fit of the wing to the front quarter panel
The quarter panels had been poorly repaired by others therefore I'm unsurprised that the fit against the wing is somewhat wayward
And the lower edge terminates short of the wing
The nearside fit is much better - there is a wing piping bead that fits between the 2 panels once painted / finally assembled
There's still fettling required to obtain anything like an acceptable panel fit - The Bradford van was constructed to reasonable standard but more agricultural than car quality - None the less I would still like the panels to fit properly prior to paint

Much fettling undertaken to resolve the poor panel fits - The quarter panel & inner wing panels are the ones that had been very poorly repaired and these affect the fit of every other panel
Some cutting and letting in of fillets helped align things
Some additional bolt apertures also helped
The flange return edges I can true up when the profiles are formed but the wing piping will cover the flange joints - Unsure on how the previous repairer of the panels expected these to align & bolt up when they had obviously never trial fitted the panels together - they must have been confident though as they had placed them into final paint
Nearside now ready for mounting to the chassis & body
And onto the offside frontal panels
Offside quarter panel fit is just as bad
And I'm now working my way through the repairs / adjustments required but its a long process that involves assembly / disassembly many times over

The offside panel fit is much worse than the nearside
I've spent much of today correcting it
The outer wing flange is supposed to align with the lower bolt hole aperture on the inner wing - its some 60mm away from doing so
Many flange edge adjustments / repairs / reshaping were made
And sometime later I was rewarded with a much better fit
Alterations to the quarter panel now brought the lower flange into alignment with the wing
And I'm now working towards replacing the rear end plate on the outer wing - There's still some way to go yet with the outer wing before its anything like ready for final profiles

I have a new pair of rear door frames for the van
But a old pair of door skins
These are weak with rust perforation in some areas but with repair they will see another life
I'll have to get the edges shotblasted and deal with the centre of the skins myself - shotblasting the skin its self would near on destroy them through distortion
Offside door skin is a little worse than the nearside skin
Which also requires repairs to the bottom of the skin
Along with the area under the window
Difference between the original frames and the new ones which have additional cross bearers fitted to add strength rather than the flimsy metal frame - I'll send the old frame up to Jowett Car Spares as it may help someone that needs an original frame

The chassis & body is now in the workshop
I've eased the ash tongue & groove flooring in the rear to get a firm fit
Then trial fitted the new inner wheel arches
These require minor modification in the morning then once the flooring is fastened down these can be permanently fitted
Inner wing panels have been trial fitted to the chassis & bulkhead
These too require some modification / reshaping to perfect the fit
Meanwhile some of the original parts are being dismantled for patterns
Whilst I have sourced a good set of used locking rods and the centre mechanism to replace the original I wanted to separate the door handle to allow it to be used for pattern - with the forthcoming restoration show in a few weeks time I should be able to hunt down most of the door furniture / lighting / sundries at the show
Other important little bits are getting cleaned up prior to being trail fitted - this is the keep for the bonnet centre rod that travels through the hinge loops - more tomorrow

Inner wings came back off and were modified as required then any bare metal was treated with construction primer to prevent any rust ingress as I work my way around rest of the panelwork - With the primer cured the inner wings were refitted - I'm having to make up various fastenings / clips / small brackets as the van came without these
The front wing brackets have been trail fitted but there is a brace bracket missing along with a spacer - I'm probably going to have to fabricate these - I'll see if I can obtain some measurements from original parts first
The rest of the front panels were also treated with construction primer where required
And the rear planked floor is now fully fitted & screwed down to the bearers
