Decision = put oil in it, pop the gearbox on (solely for starter location) tip a cuplet of fuel in the carb & see if she runs
If seau, threau in the eaule, & eaupe for the best
If not, no time wasted buttoning up
How about a rather leftfield suggestion if it doesn't work - big diesel? Merc, BMW etc?
I get the logic, and it's been done by others (I'll see if I can find a link) but it would feel sacrilegious and leave me cold - whatever happens she'll be staying V8 petrol...!!! 🤓

I didn't want to suggest an LS...
I do like that black '66 though! The reason a diesel came to mind is because of the tow car duties, I can't imagine the FE being cheap to run! I do wonder if the modern sixes can be made to look older, like the fake BDA cam covers for Zetecs and so on.

It's possible, but they'd still rattle and stink
Right now the order of preference is
410MEL to recreate what we built before (and with lessons learned) - on the hunt
390FE (same family - the one we're about to pop in, all being well)
289 / 302 small block Ford - much better access and parts availability etc., true to her roots, we have good experience with the Griff etc., but a lot of startage againage and not her original BB form
Something modern V8 and as grunty as possible - LS / Merc supercharged, Lexus with a pair of snails, etc.; tempting but time-consuming & likely to compromise historic status (as is a derv)
So think we'll stick to plan A1.5 +/- 0.5, at least for now And although fuel is dear it's still (particularly if you look at differential consumption levels) such a tiny part of the equation of running a car that we should all run big V8s IMHO - if we all did that and never scrapped anything it'd be much kinder to the planet than churning out endless Piouses into the bargain!

Since the age of 25 whereby I could afford the insurance - I have always had a V8 in something - you just cant beat them regardless of the fuel consumption for the smiles per miles factor - loads of grunt and the soundtrack - just weighing up the odds of replacing the P38 with a newer Rangey for the business tow car / hack - loads of reasonably priced V6 oil burners about - in fact many bargains currently in the Range Rover market - cant bring myself to own one though - nope its going have to be a full fat V8 petrol motor - possibly the supercharged one at that

So having lost the last 18 months to C19 & keeping on top of the work issues that flowed from it - initially dire, like the handbrake had been pulled on, through quick resurgence then frankly insanity led by the SDLT concessions, normality resumes
Today was a 1st day 'off' in many moons & some free / down time was spent wisely
Just found this and bookmarked, As I was reading this, I knew a 390 FE would be the easy option, 427s are generally out of reach due to the Cobra builders, my other thoughts went onto a "385" series, and the big 460, some versions having nearly 500ft/lbs would make the ideal platform for towing, turbo or stuff a Paxton on the front and 8/900 ft lbs would be Childs play

Ha - please don't tempt me!
I think she'll be just about right normally aspirated, and given the pain we've endured to date there's a big plus in getting her back together without too much fuss, for now at least!
I have a soft spot for Fairlane and Falcons, yours reminds me of Gladys, the orange 57 Fairlane Martin Ayres? built, spent many happy nights on Chelsea bridge watching that car do the cruise loop around the Park
