The Dope is now heated 😁 🔥. I purchased a Chinese special 12v diesel night heater which gets great reviews and looks to be a knock off of some expensive kit the van camping crew like to fit. I've not had heating in there since getting it and finding/refitting the original stuff would be a ballache and be pretty Chocolate sprinkles by todays standards. So I mounted the night heater in under the bonnet and piped it into the original heater intake on the car. Work absolutely amazingly and even has a remote fob for pre warming the car. I was pointed in its direction by a few classic vw guys who use them in a similar fashion. Not gone balls out testing it yet but have had it sat running for a few hours now keeping the inside at 20c. Not the quietest thing around but ill not notice it with the engine running and driving around. Excuse the wiring, this needs revisiting with some conduit, crimps and clips 👍🏻
its a heater for a camper van, there's loads on youtube about them. The main unit is the red and black bit, has an air intake and exhaust under the car. An air intake that blows air across the core/heater and an outlet which I have plumbed into the cars original heater channel. Also has a little pump that drives the fuel in and a micro controller. I also opted for the one with a remote fob too so I can warm it up from the house. The thing pumps out some serious heat, when I tested it I was measuring 50+ degrees at the outlet without cranking it up.
Turns out the original pipework was never designed to take the heat this thing pumps out and it tried to return to its original form. The black plastic bit was originally a 3 x 3 inch plastic square tube. Wondered why it wasn't getting very warm in there this morning.... replaced with some of the pipe work that was sent with the heater so it should be fine. Gets super toastie in there now!
So ive tinkered a little more, refitted the back bumper and removed the bonnet stand offs. Found my next job whilst trying to trace the cause of my back seats getting damp. Still not found it yet but did remove a load of matting from the parcel shelf and behind the seats where it looks like its been getting damp for a while. No structural damage just lots of surface furr. I'm lucky as the super early cars were so say made of thicker better metal but the later ones seem to be made from tin foil. Tomorrow I will finish cleaning and prepping it for a coat of por15
managed to get a couple of coats of por15 on so it should all be sealed up now. Weather forecast shows some heavy rain tomorrow so I might be able to locate leaks a little easier. I'm expecting a few due to it having old window seals and the door seals being the wrong ones but I will be able to see where I need to work on a little easier with the back seats out.
Im in need of a a spray sealer or cavity sealer. There are a few places I cant get too with a brush and would like to make sure they stay solid in the future. Mainly down the interior panelling into the sill area Any advice/recommendations?

Adey - I'm assuming that you wanting to protect the cavities that you cant access ? - If so this is what I use / recommend:
If you have a compressor & schutz type gun / lance wand its also available in the 1 litre canisters which works out a little better economically than the aerosols
On your water ingress - if you find it difficult to trace a light sprinkling of talcum powder over the suspect interior areas then a session with the hose pipe should reveal it
You dont think that having the bonnet/trunk open a little may have caused it?.....not very likely, but who knows.
I like the talcum powder idea, grumpy....
JP
found the main issue quite easily this morning, the rear window seal seems to let water through on its top edge, it then runs around to the side of the window on the inside then runs down the back panel behind the seat and puddles under the seats (or where they would be) i think i have 2 options really, replace the seal if i can find one or remove, seal it with fresh window sealant and refit...

Cheers for that, a few have advised the same stuff. The aerosol will be perfect. Its mainly for inside the interior panels where they become the sills. I can see it from the tops but cant get in there so the cans with a pipe will be perfect.
