New thread to share details of the Car that shares Workshop space with my TR6
Its a 1977 Triumph Dolomite 1850HL, manual with optional Overdrive, two owners from new, I’ve had it since just before I turned 17, it was my first car and I ran it for about 6 years before its started to show signs of structural distress. Its been undergoing a fairly Glacial paced restoration ever since. Work and domestic pressures meant it never really got a look in, and when it did I tended to rush the task in hand and not be entirely happy with what I’d done.
Now Chris and I had a plan, it was going to make its way to GN Towers where Chris would work to get the Bodyshell sorted and into paint leaving me with the mechanicals to sort. Everything changed recently however when I found myself with the opportunity to take early retirement which I seized without a second thought! That meant that would now have the luxury of free time and could perhaps (talent allowing) progress the restoration myself.
The plan is to treat this as my new (part time) job, commit to a number of days a week where I will not be available for domestic duties etc. as I will be “at work”
The car was pretty rotten, to be honest it was (still is) beyond economical restoration, I could readily by one in top order for much less than I will need to invest in this one, but we only ever have one first car, many people in our community revisit their youth by buying a car like the one they had when they were young, very few get the chance to by the actual one, if indeed it still exists so I think that makes my car very special, to me at least.
I’ve done a fair bit of welding/Panel replacement to the Driver’s side. I’d describe the work to date as functional, it would pass a MOT, but is lacking finesse. Having seen the standard achieved by many of you here I’m going back to the beginning and setting higher standards for myself.
Over the years I’ve acquired numerous NOS panels, sometimes just in case, stuff is hard to come by for these cars so you need to act when the opportunity arises, you can’t expect to be able to get a new Wing or Door like you can for a (spit) Escort!
Picture shows pretty much where we are at. Current task is stripping the Doors of all their Furniture. I have a car set of NOS Triumph 1500 Doors to go on, they are subtly different to Dolomite Doors in the area of the Handle and lock so sell for less and are more readily available. I’ll share the work involved to convert in a future post. Space is at a premium so I need to get the NOS doors out of their boxes and the terminally rusty originals scrapped to free some room up.
