1960 Ford Zephyr Convertible - Light Recommission

Lovely!

Tidy looking car and reminds me of my Hillman Super Minx which was my first car and was my dads initially. It was red with a white roof. AUU 640B The only reg number of previous cars I can remember with ease.

So basically this one is just a bit of tinkering and undoing some slightly below par jobs?

Had noticed.

Need to order some parts for the Zephyr but in order to do so the door requires removal 



With door off I could remove the hinges 



Then remove a hinge pin which in turn I could measure the diameter of - now I can order new over size pins but I will have to drill the hinges out to accept the new pins 

Further progress on the Zephyr 



Both the rear 



And front screen rubbers are original and they both leak - I have sourced new ones and these are on order 



I've removed what was left of the old A post seals 



Factory rubbers are no longer available but I've sourced a new section that I'm confident will do the job 



Quarter glass frame is wider at the top but I think that this is down to the worn door hinge pins which I'm replacing 

 

Removed a redundant electric fuel pump & pipes that the previous owner had fitted when he had fuel supply issues (turned out to be some additive or something he had put in the tank has lead replacement) he reconnected the original mechanical fuel pump & pipes once he had resolved the issue with the tank contamination 



But just how stupidly dangerous was this - he bolted the pump to the inner wing just under the battery tray 



And then connected the pump live to the battery with two tails - So the pump was continually pumping fuel - had he ever been in a accident and a fuel line rupture the pump would have just kept on spraying fuel everywhere - to think that he ran his grandchildren around in the car too   



Equally stupid but not quite has dangerous was his wiring to the front spot lamps - again direct connection to the battery but switched on the dashboard - unfused 



Removed & binned - I'll rewire them 



I replaced the bulkhead to bonnet seal 



Originals are no longer available but this D section will be fine 



Folds down under compression and is more than capable of doing the job intended 



The front seat leather cover is loose and needs the rear of it tensioning (note the right corner where I have just had a go to see if would clean up a bit) 



Someone has been here before me 



Both bottom corners of the seat frame have been rewelded at some stage in the cars life - hence they have had the upholstery removed from the frame - Just not refitted it very well 



I cut & placed a fleece liner between the leather cover & the spring seat base to help tension the cover 



Then re-tensioned & re-stapled the rear of the cover 



Gave the carpet a good vac before refitting the seat 



Removed the rear seat base whist I was at it 

 

These are the hydraulics for the power hood - I topped the hydraulic oil up in the reservoir 



And lubricated the locking mechanism which was sticking 



Locks the hood frame uprights in place 



Rear quarter glass frames rotate through 90 degrees to stow / hide in the rear inner wing 



Removed the sill tread plate to clean off the old  dried on adhesive 



Sill cavities are still wet with oil that a previous owner used to treat it with on a regular basis 



Tread plate cleaned up & refitted 



Other jobs done that are not that easily photographed



All the brakes were adjusted, handbrake cable adjusted & clipped back up at the rear to the axle where the old clips had cooded, clutch adjusted & checked for clearance, all wheel bearings checked - rears are fine but minor play on the fronts which I will see if I can tighten / shim up slightly - very minor play on the nearside track control arm but at this stage its not worth troubling with - I need to sort the handbrake ratchet / pawls - its a dashboard mounted - pull out type - it can be applied easily but when released it sticks & drags against the ratchet so it needs to came out and be sorted - more updates as I progress / parts arrive   

I removed the rear window to allow me to take better measurements of the rubber cross section - unfortunately the rubber extrusion that I thought that would do the job wont 



But I think I've located something else that will (he says hopefully) 

Nice job... You make progressing a car look so easy. Frustratingly easy even! But I have to keep in mind you have a great workshop and it's your day job to boot!
