So a little bit has been going on in the background. Firstly the engine and gearbox, ive just got back from dropping the gearbox off for a check/clean and replace parts if needed. Its a reliable guy ive used before and rebuilt the gearbox on my Moke kit car (AMC CUB) so I trust him 100%. At the same time I picked up some new bushes for the suspension and the rest of the engine parts. Last week the distributor came back from being rebuilt so I am pretty much there to start putting the engine back together.
So while all that was going on I went back and did some bodywork again. Now the wings sit under the scuttle and there had been some dodgy welding in that area. Ive seen some horror stories regards the scuttle area on these so wanted to do a proper job. Do I finish the floor or work from the top down. Decided would be best to see what was hiding under the scuttle, clean the edges and reweld the tops where the wing goes. Then it will be time to place the subframe in.
The spot welder must have just been invented in 1973 and was given to the apprentice to try on this car as there was a spot weld every 10mm.. 123 spot welds i drilled out - One Hunderd and twenty chuffing three.. My poor drill and arm !!!
But by eck I was glad I did as what was underneath certainly needs treating. I think I need to put a section in the middle as well as its quite badly pitted. I could do with localise blasting/treating of the underscuttle area. My mate has a small pot that will do the job fine enough.
Not as much access to the cavity as I expected but worthwhile excercise non the less I am sure you would agree.
I need to remove the poorly fitted n/s/f inner wing and ill be opening the o/s up so that should make things easier.
I had some time left with work so I have booked a week off which should hopefully see some big progress in this. That will be in November though. In the interim ill keep working on the little bits. Really pleased with this little car.
