Not wishing to derail the thread but I had a plasterer come and do quite a lot of work for me on a London property - he explained that he was the gofer / brake man / for his wife's carriage driving - he met the duke on many occasions of whom he spoke of very highly and explained to me that he just treated everybody at the event with a down to earth very humous attitude
I think if there was anything that came out of the wall of tribute programmes that we were hit with it was the fact that Yes he could be very human and personable, usually away from the cameras. He was as un-PC as Bernard Manning, he could be irascible, he "didn't suffer fools gladly" but he did a vast amount of good work, largely unseen.
My grandfather's cousin knew Prince Philip well, David worked his way up from a humble background to become Captain of HMS Eagle, (sister ship to Ark Royal - R09). He was also one of the Elder Brethren of Trinity House, along with the Duke. In retirement David put his efforts into coordinating and raising funds for the restoration of HMS Trincomalee, the Duke gave the project his whole-hearted support and his time. They were friends, he was a very loyal friend as well as being very dutiful.
I think if he had not chosen this path in life he would have done remarkable things on his own merit.
I think the humous is probably something to do with him being Greek?

I think MkX has done a great job with this thread on searching out the images & posting them up - Question is do we make him the 'Royal Correspondent' for BRM

Thanks. This thread was more about how many interesting / incredible / diverse machines one person could take control of during their lifetime. Generally speaking my views upon the institution of royalty would not make me the least bit suited to this appointment.

Ah - In that case I'll withdraw the application - great thread regardless
It struck me as a brave choice having a LR for the main event.... could have been really embarrassing waiting for the AA man to get it going!
The Duke left nothing to chance, apparently they gave another Landy the same treatment and had it on stand by as a spare. Worst case scenario - plenty of horses and gun carriages in that neck of the woods!
