Just as an aside seeing as you’re not telling us owt thought you might be interested in this. A company up in a Brum is producing aluminium A-series engine blocks with a 5 bearing crank for use with the BMW motorbike heads. Looks pretty trick. Sorry it’s on FB.

I'd love one of these for my large and important De Tomaso but idly pricing up the head conversion alone belted towards the 5 figure mark so gawd knows what these would run out at, plus there's probably a limit to how rapidly a chap can bounce while maintaining suitable levels of dignity! 🤓

Much as I love the A-Series engine I fail to see the point of these type of conversions, if you want more power in a mini there are better more modern engines available that can be made to fit easily with a custom made subframe kit and have aa gearbox to suit which can handle the power easily and has a 5th gear.
If you want to modify the A-Series there are loads of options available including supercharging and turbo charging but once you get to the point that its going to cost thousands and thousands for a highly strung engine thats on the limit of what it can do (or beyond), needs frequent strip down and inspections and is likely to fail at any minute it all seems pointless to me. Its not as if an a-series with a BMW head on it in some way preserves the character of the engine or the car. Just my 2p.

All agreed... and actually a standardish 1275GT has a pretty nicely matched amount of grunt for the chassis, handling, weight, and so on...

I'm all for people pushing the boundaries with the venerable old a-series. Look at the old 7 and 8 port heads that companies like Weslake and Ardern used to make. Groundbreaking stuff at the time. Then there's the 16v Jack Knight and MED heads. It's all just evolution baby.
