“Yes, I'm teaching her to drive, as soon as she gets her student license sorted out.”
Such an innocuous little phrase, trips lightly off the tongue, gives no clue as to what may lie ahead.
We found that the world renowned Smart Driving School was offering the required 15-hour Driving Theory course, online, for a mere PHP2,000, i.e., not a lot in anyone’s currency. So we booked and paid for it. The former can be done over the net, the latter requires you to go to their bank and physically pay the cash in.
This was duly done some four weeks ago. Silence.
A week later, Tania sent them a mail, just to jog their memories, like. More silence.
A week ago Monday, she dropped into the local branch. “Ah, we’ll send you an SMS.” Silence ever since.
She’s gone back to see them again today and she’s not in a good mood.
Update:- There’s been a letter from the Land Transport Office (who do all things licensey) saying that all driving schools must suspend their online courses until further notice. No reason given.
Fine, except face-to-face ones are still banned so how, I ask, do we proceed from here?
Checking this morning, the LTO website is still saying she needs to do the course, even though it’s now not possible.
All sounds very complicated, judging by the standards of the other drivers perhaps there is a black market for licences?!
There is a huge black market for licenses. I was offered several before I properly converted mine to a local one. For a foreigner, it's just not worth the hassle.
I've just had a look on the Smart driving school website and there is now no mention of the theory course, not even that it's been suspended. It's like it never existed!
So, this morning, we hit up Quezon City to pick up new shock absorbers and then I took My Little Honour Student for breakfast up the Handlebar pub.
As usual, she devastated the plate, but that's not the point of this post.
Whilst Tania was licking the pattern off, I espied a beer promotion. There's a local brewery down Laguna way called Crazy Carabao and one of their beers is an India Pale Ale, for which I have been known to be a bit of a tart.
I'm meeting a pal there tomorrow for a few scoops (sans vehicle) so asked the rather fetching waitress if they had it in stock.
"Yes sir George, 199 Peso for three." Just over a quid a bottle for 6.5%? What's not to like?
I hope they don't expect me to cook tomorrow when I get home!

IPA, big breakfast, sunshine, jealous not me, nope, definitely not.....
SMS'd an agent via a property ad online. She promised me "Jimmy, one of my staffs will Viber you." Sounds like fun. Anyway, Jimmy obviously didn't think so as he remained stoically silent.
I got back in touch.
She (the agent) filled up my screen with lots of pictures of toilets and random men painting things. No description, no price not even if they were all of the same house.
I ask for some more details.
"hi this is in BF Heva , this is 65k 2 storey 3 br with den and maids room garden, house is well lighted" So now you know as much as I do.
I ask if it/them are available to view this Saturday.
"hi yes . we have aeveral houses to show"
At 10am this morning I enquired where and when she'd like to meet tomorrow morning. It's now five-thirty and silence.
Another was recommended to me via a mate's girlfriend. I SMS yesterday asking him to give me a call this morning as I knew I'd be busy and forget. He replied that he would. Did he? What do you think?

Good luck with the search George - is this the normal game for everyone out there or do you just get mucked about in general because you are not native of the country

If we were still in KL, the answer to that question would have been simple, hence the fact that I never saw a single apartment there until it came to sign the lease.
For a White Guy trying to do it on their own, it's a minefield of misery. Madam, despite being a foreigner, is at least an Asian foreigner, so had no problems. They were obviously pi55ed off when they saw me, having been beaten down on rent by Madam!
Here, it they just seem to mess everyone around without favour. When Madam first started looking when we moved to Manila, she'd come home with murder in her eyes after a day of agents and, after accompanying her to view a couple of places, I can easily see why!
I think it's basically a great job for lazy people. They don't listen to what you want and just show you any old tat they happen to have on their books. If you do decide, they get a chunk from you and another little sweetener from the owner. Money for old rope. I haven't found one yet that actually works for you to find what you're looking for. The last three houses came via word of mouth or, in the case of the last one, a sign outside when I was driving past.
Unfortunately, where we're looking now is an unknown quantity and most of the houses are in gated communities, so you can't just drive around and maybe see something you fancy.
Anyway, we're obviously not going to see any today, so that's two weeks wasted.
I'm off to change my shockers instead.
P.S. As I was writing the above, I received this message; "hi so rry we are fully book today already. monday is better." This is despite being told that midweek viewings are a non-starter, and her telling me earlier that she had several to show me, ON SATURDAY! Lazy cow!
Anyway, I've just sacked her off. There's still another 300 others to make me suffer.
Sounds like they've all been trained the same, estate agents (or realtors)..... Something will pop up mate. Well done for the Uni stuff, top job on your part for teaching the language without too many expletives..... still trying to work out what "FATH" is on the medal though.....
Rover 75 Connie SE (stored) MG ZTT 160 (for sale) Rover 75 Connie Tourer (dog hauler and general shifter) Toyota Starlet Sportif Auto (town car) Maestro 700 van (under build)
i'm sure a major qualification to be an estate agent anywhere is to be stone deaf. when we were looking for our place in lanzarote we were crystal clear to the agents that any property they showed us must be in a specific area and NOT have any neighbours above (too many holidays ruined by 3am pickford removals re-enactments!) , yet every one dragged us around just those!!
FA TH is what you get when the guy making the medal knows something should go in there but can't quite remember what!
And why do foreigners have a love for dragging furniture around the floor in the early hours? I've experienced it in two apartments we've had. Inexplicable!
Anyway, the national press in this part of the world tend to be pretty fawning of authority, rarely criticising government or an individual, unless it obvious that person is no longer in favour with the powers that be, in which case all bets are off.
All I can assume is that Police Major General Vicente Danao Jr must be well in with Duterte & Co., therefore beyond reproach, for now.
This appeared in the press the other day showing him attempting to destroy some illegal gaming machines…
"National Capital Region Police Office chief Police Major General Vicente Danao Jr. destroys 136 units of illegal video karera on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at the Southern Police District Command headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City."
If that had been the soaraway Sun, it’d be tagged, “Danno Loses Head Over One Armed Bandits!” or somesuch.
