Something that has been at the back of my mind for a while, and grumpynorthener 's visit brought it back to front.
I've got a double garage, but it is short at just 4.5m usable length.
Because of all my tools etc, I can only just fit the Morris in, and nothing else.
I need an extension.
The missus said draw it up so she could see what it looks like.
So I fired up Fusion 360 and got measuring and sketching.
Everything is pretty much to scale, and you can see the Daimler would be hanging out the back wall, if I'd included it in the drawing.
The wooden area is decking - that is rotten, and has a garden shed with a knackered roof on it, an outside workbench and a lot of junk.
The garage with an apex roof is my neighbours, our houses are at 90degrees to each other.
So I've designed the extension.
I can't continue the apex roof of my original garage, it'll block all the sun to the neighbours garden.
I can't extend forwards, as it'll block the neighbours sun, and eat into parking space on the drive.
The decking is 380mm below the level of the current garage floor. I'm using that as a datum for the new build.
The porch not only gives space, but allows a ramp down to the lower level.
With the walls removed you can see the floorspace I'll hopefully have to play with.
It is an area roughly 6.5m x 3m
Red is the original garage floor.
Blue is where I'd build out the original garage floor to take cars up to 5.5m in length
Yellow is the workshop floor.
Green is either a ramp between the two levels, or the grass outside
I measured up my cabinets, workbenches and other large items, to make sure it fits well enough.
Which it does
I also put in some scale models of me, to make sure I don't bang my head as I transition through the areas.
I know nothing about building - bar what I've seen on Grand designs.
I assume it will need a steel RSJ so the back wall can be taken out.
But things like damp courses and roofing materials I know not about.
I'm not going to go overboard on insulation, the original garage is single skinned, so I think I'll be wasting my time putting too much in.
Some kind of curtain where the back wall was, to separate the cars from the workshop would be nice though.
The kitchen window looks over onto the patio/grass, so it has to look right.
This is the final artists rendering
Yeah - pretty happy with that.
My neighbours with similar garages are replacing the twin front door with a single roller door.
I'd like to do that too if I have any money left.
What do you all reckon ?
Am I on the right track ?
Any recommendations for a builder ?
