Campers - they have been around since the 1920's in all shapes & sizes - loved by some & hated by others with resurgence of the vintage scene and with staycations very much becoming the norm - campers have enjoyed a much renewed interest
Pics of your favourite or not so favourite campers, yours or owned by others are all welcome
This was my first foray into campers Back in 2001 before the scene tax was invented.
A pretty high spec Westfalia, with 2.1 flat four. Try as I might, I couldn't find a potion that would keep the GRP roof, anything similar to the paintwork.
It was an import from the US ISTR, hence the left hand drive. Didn't bother me one bit, and the captains chairs on swivels were lush
Interior was very Germanic. I did the conversion to UK electrics, and I seem to remember a conversion for the propane tank too. The fridge was a chest variety next to the rear seat - freeing up the undersink cupboard for other stuff.
Bed layout is pretty standard for one of these I believe.
I sold it to a couple who were going to export it to France. But it looks like it came back, as it was MOT'd until a couple of years ago, and amassed 175K on the odometer
Another one I wish I held onto now, given the increase in value of the last 20 years.
our old girl , it was a faithful old bus for the 10 years we had it. apart from its appetite for dinosaur juice it was just about the perfect true mpv!
Camper No2 was a Dodge Road Trek. I bought it from the US via eBay back in late 2002 I paid $10,000 for it, by the time it had landed in Southampton in Jan of 2003 it had cost me £10,000 The pictures weren't much to go on, and the auction finished around Thanksgiving, so I got a bargain, as the condition was excellent.
Driving it home from the docks with no number plates was legal, and quite amusing.
I did the minor tweaks needed to the electrics, and got it MOTd and registered without any dramas . Single rear door was unusual to my eyes.
Rear lounge that also had a central table and converted to a double bed. There was an AC unit at the back. But I can't remember if it was useful in England.
I had two young kids at the time, so forward facing seats, with belts, that converted into small single beds was a winner.
Quite a nice thing to drive with a 5L V8 and power everything. Wasn't too bad on fuel either.
The kitchen had a 110V microwave. I used a 240V dropper box to convert UK campsite 230V to the van with good success.
There was even a loo. Although with a black holding tank, it wasn't as convenient as the UK cartridge system.
I only kept it 6 months, and the initial driver behind the project was to make a bit of money - which it did
