About a week ago friends of our family offered me their 1996 2.8 TDI Diamond.
They have owned the car since new and its tested until Aug next year. It has 109k on the clock.
I have always liked this car, I actually went to the dealer with them to collect it back in Aug 1996. Its no garage queen, it has some scars inside and out, electrical issues plus a small amount of deferred maintenance.
The good, top of the line back in the day, it hasnt done any work, never had a tow bar, has never been off road, it basically trundled around west London for the last 24 years.....plus they offered it to me for free....although I did give them a small gift equivalent to its scrap value as a thank you.
My plan
1) Do all the no cost fixes first. This is a decent list in itself.
2) Replace all fluids + timing belt. In terms of mileage the belt is okay, in years its old so Ill play timing belt roulette in the short term while I do the no cost fixes first.
3) I dont know after that....Ill see if I like it and then decide.
If this is of any interest Ill post some pics & my updates.
If this type of project isn't quite correct for the forum (I understand some might be thinking why bother!) happy for mods to delete.

Nice to have you on here - These weren't to everybody's liking even when they were new - however they now survive in fairly low numbers and any survivors are very much welcome on BRM
Good old trucks, trouble is they were compared to Land Rover/Toyota/Mitsubishi off roaders but they were priced much much lower so it wasn't a fair comparison, 2.8 Isuzu diesel was the best engine in the A series Frontera a bit agricultural though, a very cool running engine so the mod was to put a different thermostat in otherwise it took forever to get heat in the cabin! If its a manual watch out for the DMF falling to bits
Well here it is, in all its glory.....after a good scrub....
The list of issues:
2 x Elec mirrors kaput 2 x Elec rear windows kaput Rev counter kaput Fuel guage kaput Radio kaput Heated rear screen kaput Rear wiper kaput Sagging headliner Play in front wheel bearings ( adjustable so will try that first) Needs pads all round + ideally front discs All fluids need to be flushed and changed Timing belt overdue Dent in the rear passenger side
What Iv done so far:
Initial adjustment of steering box
This made a big difference to how it drives......its no sports car but it had a mind of its own before. I left 1/2 an inch of play in the steering, I think Ill make a minor adjustment again but Ill do this after I have adjusted the front wheel bearings
Adjusted idle speed
This also made a big difference. I got a shock at how rough it was at idle when I collected it. I knew it was agricultural but my dad had xud peugeots when we were young so I knew something must be wrong. I noticed applying slight presure on the accelerator smoothed it out so I made a small adjustment to the screw and she runs really nice now.
No pic of this.
Rear elec window
So this is a strange one, the window goes down perfectly but when I try to put it up all it does is click. I have to manhandle the window up again.
If anyone has any ideas on what is up with this Id welcome suggestions?
i know squat about these trucks in particular but i wonder if the bulk of the electrical gremlins are maybe related in cause , perhaps dodgy shared earths or similar?

You could well be right. Previous owners actually had a bad earth from the battery, he had the cable replaced.
What I know from the previous owner is things just broke over time though, not all in one go.
The elec windows, I read somewhere there is some central control box somewhere that gives trouble. Im going to check where that is and dig it out next.
Treat yourself to a can of Servisol Super 10 switch cleaner. It has sorted many electrical gremlins for me , from dodgy remote keys to intermittent alarm gremlins , gammy switches and dodgy connections.
There is a control unit for the windows, under the centre console I think but if it fails it gives more problems than just one window, it might just be a lazy motor as the back windows don't get much use? The rear screen heater and wiper used to have problems with crap relays/timers that used to fail, that was common. Its a long time ago now but I think there is a bunch of relays on the slam panel near the passenger side headlamp which get the weather and the terminals go bad. I think there is a big bunch of connections in the drivers side kick panel which again used to cause problems and I cant remember if it was A series or B series but there is a major earth point under the passenger seat which again was a problem area
Regarding the windows I did some very brief checking today.
I pulled the switches out, cleaned them with electrical contact cleaner, let them dry and replaced them.
I confirmed the passenger rear window is getting 12 volts when the switch is pressed ( window lift controller is clicking also) but it is now only moving a cm or so up or down each time. It was going down all the way on Thursday, it just wouldnt go up again.
The drivers rear window isnt getting any power at all. The window lift controller does not click.
I now suspect this window lift controller. As a next step I am going to take it out, open it up and see if there is anything obviously wrong with it.
Pretty sure at this age they had the trap protection control on the windows so if they feel an obstruction on the way up they back off, that also tends to stop the windows working if the glass gets sticky in the runners or stiffness any where else, no sniggering in the back! Thought I had a control unit somewhere but cant lay my hands on it at present!

Thats not a bad shout regarding the trap protection.
I did spray some silicone oil in the guides, I may give the slider rail ( I dont know what the proper name is) a spray tomorrow when I put the lift unit back in.
I took the unit out and opened it up to check for anything obvious, nothing stood out to my untrained eye.
I gave it a good spray of contact cleaner but thats about it. Ill see if it makes any difference tomorrow.
I got a secondhand control unit this week (and a few other bits). 3 & 1/2 electric windows now work on this Frontera.
The drivers side rear window that was completely dead now works perfectly.
The window that goes down perfectly but doesn't go up is the same as before. I think the issue is with the regulator/ motor so I will add this to a shopping list I am making at the moment. I've disconnected the motor and put the door card back on.
I've identified the issue with the rear heated screen, the metal strip going from the connector to the screen is broken. .
I flushed the brake fluid, the brake pedal feels much better now.
I discovered my rev counter does work, its just not all that accurate! I'm unsure what the actual issue is but I've been told the signal comes from a sensor on the injection pump.
I will look at the front wheel bearings tomorrow to see what adjustment can be done, time permitting.
No wonder the brakes feel better, that old fluid looks like cola! Does the tacho needle sit below 0 when its turned off? May just need the needle resetting on the spindle

Thats actually a good shout. It doesnt sit below zero but maybe their is an issue where the neddle and the drive connects.
