Not a lot of progress with this over the last week. Did manage to get the front scuttle panels up to be scanned.
They have the tallest 3D printer I have ever seen, even if it’s lying on its side 🤣🤣
Hopefully get the scans back in about 10 days or so. Moving back to the chassis legs, did get time to peel away some of the unwanted.
Reinforcing plate looks a bit crusty.
Now looking for a suitable vessel to chuck it into with some citric acid to remove the mankyness.
A better idea is to give them to Sam and let him take them up to Ribble Technology with the Celica shell for processing & priming - you won't achieve a better result otherwise
Don’t think there is much point in getting them primed as I am going to, at the very least, change the inner reinforcement. Might land up folding up complete new ones...
Not much directly related Rx2 progress this week ,I am afraid, but progress made in something to aid it’s progress 🤣🤣 The front chassis legs have a round tube welded through them, joining them together. I need to sympathetically remove the remains of the tube from the two legs. Seen here marked with shonky blue arrows,( not to be confused with the Red Arrow’s ,who aren’t shonky, hence the colour change 😉) Should be simple. Bung it on the mill and bore it out. Hmm. Problem. Two mills and both require attention. Ok. You have my attention. The one two axis cnc mill is like a Bridgeport on steroids. This was obtained from my previous employer as goosed. After I left a certain individual who thought he was now on the ticket to instant millionaire status, what with him being indispensable, soon found out he wasn’t,and became disgruntled. Before he left he sabotaged this machine. He happened to mention this to me in passing a couple of months later. So pendant off the machine and time for a look.
So opened up the box of electrickery. More akin to an ‘80s television with its Cathode ray tube, even though it was manufactured in 1995🤣 Much searching later and still none the wiser,I decided that possibly the yarn I had been strung about sabotage was more likely to be a campfire story,as no sign of tampering was evident. Oh well, let me just straighten this power transistor to satisfy my inner OCD, and I will put it back together and be on my way
Well ,well ,well, looky here.... They say a little bit of knowledge is dangerous. Well in this case it is. Closer inspection shows the one leg has been snipped off, blunt side cutter marks present. So, why is a little bit of knowledge dangerous then in this case, you ask? You see that power transistor, made originally by Motorola,is obsolete. With the swap over to LCD and LED screens, those transistors were discontinued as they are redundant. Components of that ilk, still in production won’t cost more that a couple of quid. That ,being obsolete, but still in demand by the arcade game anoraks, drives the price up considerably. Like trading at £50 a pop seriously 😳 Couldnt he have found a cheaper component to give the snip? 🙄🤣🤣
A couple of months searching resulted in one arriving last week Sub £20. Unsoldered the damaged one with the aid of some solder wick . Bit of a pig as it’s a double sided board that’s epoxied to the tube once the board is populated.
New transistor soldered in.
Absolute pig to get the corner nut back on. Didn’t feel like taking the whole box to pieces to gain access,so bit of wire to slide the washer and nut down to the stud worked a charm. Allback together. Will possibly recommission that machine this weekend. But I doubt it , as something else has cropped up 🤣🤣🤣
^^^ The way some people think / behave never ceases to amaze & disappoint... ^^^
My line of works brings me up against this sort of thing quite regularly and what amazes me more than the level some people will go to over something petty is that some of them fully justify their actions and the subsequent consequences.
Nice save on the electronics, lets hope that sorts it
The best thing about being self employed is not having to work with idiots! The xmas party is a bit dull though oh and no holiday pay, no sick pay, no pension, the phone ringing 24/7 etc etc!

Aye, for sure. Sometimes I think one should always think the worst of people ,that way they cannot disappoint. Very cynical outlook... The bit that absolutely smacked my gob,was when that little titbit of information came out,he was actually fishing for a job with me 😳😳. Talk about having my mind made up instantly. Not that it makes it any better, and it’s not an ageist statement, but it’s the kind of thing you would expect from a teenager who had one too many Stella’s the night before. Definitely not from somebody who was nearly half a century old when he did it.....Some of the holes in the bed of the machine that also hadn’t been there sixth months before, also make you wonder. Cannot help but think they probably were not accidental....😡

Pretty confident it will. I did manage to get it to fire up with a jumper lead across that leg. Decided to replace it rather than try and solder it because of the vibrations and it was snipped very close to the body of the transistor.
Yep,definite advantages to working alone. Christmas party is anything but dull, the landlord throws a Christmas party in February for all his tenants. Really decent ,generous, bloke, him and I invariably land up chatting on most Sundays if I am up at the unit,he always pops in for a gander. He is a very wealthy man with a lot of property he rents out,so the party is always a good do. 😊Holiday pay doesn’t bother me, I make enough without having to factor that in. Sickpay isnt an issue,I have had 3 days off sick in the last 13 years. I have my own pension , switch the phone off when I don’t want to be disturbed, but religiously call back everyone who called whilst it was off. You can have board meetings at any time of night or day. Well if anybody asks why I am talking to myself,I tell them I am not,and please not to interrupt the board meeting again 🤣🤣
As some of you may know, this man cave that now holds the mortal remains of the rx2 was rented with the idea that it would give the rx2 project a bigger home. The idea was it needs to basically self fund to cover the rent. Which it has been doing. With this in mind I bought a cnc vertical machining center awhile back. The idea being small overflow jobs could go on it,but the main reason was to have a dedicated machine for making what I need for the Rx2. One that doesn’t need to be broken down constantly to do the next job. What with the front scuttle being scanned as we speak I decided I really need to get this recommissioned. It was bought as a non runner in the hope it wouldnt cost a fortune to sort out.
The day it arrived via IPad Rocketship Absolutely filthy
Bought from a very strange bloke/ compulsive liar/ div of the highest order. If I had known just what an idiot the seller was,I would have just walked on by..🙄. It looked like it had never been cleaned in its life Pretty much all the issues so far in getting this going again stem from his zero maintenance and cleaning policy. How you can buy a machine,on finance for £30k and not keep it clean, beggars belief Five days of cleaning later it was starting to look a bit more like a vmc
Anyway, moving on. Just connect it up and see what gives, right? Wrong. 😕 One issue I was soon to find out was the electrical distribution board. I have two DB boards in the unit. One for three phase and one for single phase. The single phase one I replaced with a new one as the old one didn’t inspire much confidence. Surprised they still made electricity for it. At one stage 15 years ago, this unit was a woodworking shop. Everything is still full of sawdust, including the fuse box. An accident just waiting to happen as fine saw dust explodes like a gas... Anyway, the three phase board was retained after having all the dust blown out of it. It turned out there are not enough 32A MCB’s present. Into the van and off to the electrical factors. Lots of Oohing, Aarrhing and sucking of teeth. Board is basically obsolete, but they will see what they can find. Nothing in stock but they can get some in for tomorrow. Back to the unit, temporarily disconnected the cnc lathe and wired VMC to that breaker. Switched it on....
Initially promising as the screen came to life ...but it just hangs there. Looked at the ccu unit. Hmmm. ....8 8 is the sign of the devil on these, the equivalent of the 3 rings of death on an Xbox Judging by the fact things are numbered and there is a job number on the ccu,it’s fair to say somebody has been here before me. Unit removed and sent to Northern Industrial, the crowd that sorted the drive out for my cnc lathe. They quoted 15 working days to repair it.
